One of the more amusing — and frankly unbelievable — stories of West Ham’s transfer window has emerged regarding Mateus Fernandes. The Portuguese youngster has been chased by Irons boss Graham Potter for most of the transfer window, but it appears all has not been plain sailing.
According to reports from that hotbed of football gossip — BBC Radio Solent and the Southampton Daily Echo — the Portuguese Under-21 star went AWOL in a bid to force through his transfer to the Hammers.
The tale suggests Fernandes travelled to East London for his medical without the knowledge or permission of Southampton. Quite what happened next is unclear, but it’s presumed the £40m midfielder made enough of a point for an agreement between the two clubs to be reached soon after.
Local reports also claim Fernandes was insistent on sealing his move to West Ham — and with the player undergoing his medical last night, it appears the South coast club allowed the deal to progress.
Anyway, as long as the players registration is submitted before 12pm tomorrow, Fernandes should be eligible to play against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

He didn’t want to play for Southampton in the championship at the end of the day and Southampton didn’t want a player that didn’t want to play for them.
If this story is true it should set off warning lights – shades of Payet and he will do this to us a year down the line
You can understand players taking actions like these when ridiculous values are placed on them when they’re not content to stay.
Don’t agree with players acting like that and west ham should not have been party to that kind of behaviour if the stories true
He now has the a big contract. Next year will be on the move again. What happens if we are relegated.
Only hope sack pots, and bring in Former player, Frank Lampard, plus John Terry.
Great signing in Fernandes
Why have we taken so long to get players in
Please after watching Obana last night do not sign him
Will not be a up grade on Hermansen
We have not given the poor guy time to settle in
Shame if Paqueta goes but at least we have some fresh hopefully hungry players
Feel more optimistic if we get the other players we have bid for
Oh. We (our owners) were right all along? They do know what they’re doing?
This could ruin so many narratives masquerading as comments.
What are the chances Gonzo?
