Saka, Rashford and Sancho abuse shows all that’s wrong in our game

|

Sometimes there is nothing left to do but shake your head in despair!

And the widespread racial abuse of Bukayo Saka, 19, Marcus Rashford, 23, and Jadon Sancho, 21 – targeted over missing penalties in the game’s dying minutes – is one of those moments.

The politicians were of course quick to leap into the attack as one might expect – some however with a past record for racial abuse themselves.

It’s true of course that the vast majority of English fans are excellent examples of good sportsmanship but there remains an element whose behaviour continues to disgrace the name of our  game.

The online abuse – notably as usual from Twitter – simply has to stop and only the people who run the thing can do that by closing the accounts of these vile individuals.

We’ve heard these thugs boo the taking of the knee, offer their hideous views on their chosen platform and no doubt involve themselves in booing national anthems.

After seeing Rashford and Sancho’s failures – you would have thought Saka might have tried a different technique – and as for Kane, what kind of captain is it that is too scared to take a penalty?

    • EssBeeMUC says:

Kane took the first penalty and scored. What surprised me was the fact no senior stepped up to take the penalties. Sancho and Saka are what age? 20 and 19 respectively? I think this is where Southgate got things wrong.

EssBee, we are a multi cultural society. I don’t believe we’ve become more intolerant, just that the intolerant section has become louder due to social media. For every bigot you read on twatter etc. there are thousands who don’t agree but of whom we never hear.

      Hey Mooro,
You’re right, England is a multi cultural country and has been for a very long time. I remember in the 60’s (yes… I’ve a good memory 😜) my best mate was Black.
I just think racism is on increase because of the keyboard warriors. As Hugh suggested, social media is a global disease.

I think there has always been an under current of racial intolerance, as there is in most societies, it’sjust that it wasn’t noticed so much before social media gave the cowards the anonymity to spew their bile on the rest of us. The media companies should be held responsible for their own content.

It’s a sad commentary that this is the first thing I thought of when all 3 missed. What I wouldn’t do just to give them a fist bump and pat on the back.

    • Brooklyn Hammer says:

just to be clear – the players I mean! Not the a—— who are abusing them.

  • Marcus says:

It’s true that most of the English fans doesn’t support this kind of behavior. However, as long as FA, the politicians, the fans and the clubs makes real statements and takes actions about this it won’t go away. England has more rotten egg fans than any other country. Sadly. Everyone needs to show that it’s not ok to do all that kind of shit. I mean, who the f… is booing during an national anthem? Or screams f…..g c..t to a 7 year old crying girl? Horrible!

  • The Cat says:

Change in society can only happen when it comes from our leaders at the top…. it is Obviously not a concern to them?
These misfits of society are effectively being allowed to cause division and hold this country to ransom with their sick views……… Lest We Forget!

  • EssBeeMUC says:

    I understand Hugh.
Sorry if I have overstepped the mark.

  • GaryD says:

Before Saka’s shot was stopped, I was teasing my ManU supporting family (by Skype) that it was ManU’s fault (Rashford and Sancho). Still a moronic statement, but meant in jest and shared suffering.

  • Spotty Dog says:

Well said Hugh. Booing opposition and their anthems is the total opposite of sportsmanship. I was so pleased to see the Italians take the knee as well.

  • EssBeeMUC says:

Well said, but it doesn’t only show what’s wrong the game, it shows what’s wrong with society. I used to think England became a multi cultural country and racism was on the wane but sadly it seems that racism/intolerance/xenophobia has increased. I believe it is down to lack of education. I don’t think racism will ever go away. 😏

    • I’d like to have that discussion elsewhere but sadly this isn’t a sociological site EssBee

      • GaryD says:

Hi Hugh. I think the discussion have to appear on footie websites. That is where the messaging must come from and I applaud you for tolerating some expression of unity against racism.

  • Saul says:

It’s not what’s wrong in the game, it’s what’s wrong in ours, and other’s, societies. That comes from leadership at the very top of the tree and whatever your politics, poor leadership enables the companies who have done nothing to curb this global, societal cancer, to continue to do nothing.

  • George Green says:

    Well said

  • DJHammer says:

Well said Hugh, I echo this statement entirely.
How would these perpetrators feel if it were their own son’s being abused in such abhorrent ways?
For too long have we looked the other way, booing an opponent’s national anthem, it’s been happening for far too long.
It’s 2021 ffs, an enlightened era of information supposedly, why do so many people hold on to warped views of others who have a different skin pigmentation to their own.

    • GaryD says:

The human brain has not changed significantly in over 50 000 years. IQ has barely budged from the original, measured baseline. We are cave dwellers with cars and computers, in spite of our hubris.
There is no base for race. It is a human construct and needs to be torn down.

    Well said Hugh
