Diafra Sakho has been selected by Senegal for the first time since missing the African Nations Cup finals earlier this year.
Sakho angered Senegal football federation officials by pulling out of their squad for January’s tournament because of a niggling back injury.
West Ham were later fined £71,000 – and reprimanded by FIFA – after they played Sakho in an FA Cup win just 18 days after he withdrew from the Senegal squad. The player scored in the 1-0 victory against Bristol City, and football’s top brass opened an investigation to see if the club had breached strict rules governing the player’s availability to play for his country.
His recall was confirmed on Thursday by the Senegal Football federation. They play Nambia on 4 September in Group K qualifying stage of the 2017 African Nations Cup.
This will be Sakho’s first inlcusion in the squad in 10 months. His last appearance came on 15 November, when Senegal beat Egypt 1-0 in Cairo.
Meanwhile, fellow Hammer, Cheikhou Kouyaté, has also been called up for international duty with Senegal.
Clearly it is good to have international players who deserve to represent their countries, but this is the last thing we need as bubs says. What a nightmare scenario if Sakho gets injured in these additional matches away from us.
This is the last thing we need,
He needs wrapping up with Lee in cotton wool and only letting out on match days,
So it will be a little bit of massage out of action for 2 months,
Let’s hope Kouyate can stay away from their medical witch doctor
