West Ham manager David Moyes has a very welcome selection dilemma awaiting him. Not only for the next Premier League fixture against Manchester City, but for the foreseeable future.
I’m acutely aware that every team needs a big squad, and West Ham are no exception. Hammers fans may even find that there is no such thing as a ‘first team’, given the embarrassment of riches at David Moyes disposal. However, that doesn’t stop us from indulging in a bit of selection fun whilst killing time during the international break.
Here’s the conundrum . . . Five into three doesn’t go.
Tomas Soucek’s unfortunate knock to the head and subsequent concussion hiatus, was painful and unfortunate for the player. But as a result it did allow David Moyes to stumble across an excellent midfield combination. James Ward Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Lucas Paqueta provide an impressive balance of attacking and defending in midfield. Under normal circumstances, there would be no reason to suspect any manager would break up a winning formula.
However David Moyes rates Tomas Soucek very highly. It would surprise nobody if the Hammers gaffer looked to put the giant Czech straight into the team. If that is the case, then who misses out?
And just to muddy the water even further . . . what then happens to Mohammed Kudus?
My personal answer would be to drop Soucek, and select Kudus on the left in place of Benrahma. Will David Moyes do the same? Well, somehow I doubt it but it may be a selection he gradually arrives at.
It would be no surprise at all if the first time we see Kudus start, is in Europe against Bačka Topola. Of course, your guess is as good as mine. Ultimately it’s David Moyes problem . . . but what a very nice problem to have.
