West Ham United could be celebrating a shrewd piece of transfer business thanks to a sell-on clause included in the 2023 transfer of young midfielder Pierre Ekwah to Sunderland.
The Hammers hold a 35% stake in any profit Sunderland generate when they eventually sell Ekwah.Since Sunderland acquired Ekwah for a minimal fee, any future transfer is almost guaranteed to yield a significant profit, with the Irons reaping a nice reward for their foresight.
Despite limited experience before joining the Black Cats, Ekwah has flourished under their guidance. He’s become a vital cog in their midfield, attracting attention from Premier League clubs like Crystal Palace and now Udinese from Italy have made a concrete offer to lure him away.
Ekwah is contracted to Sunderland for three more years, giving them the upper hand in any transfer negotiations.
Also there’s no immediate pressure to sell, particularly with other players like Jack Clarke and Trai Hume potentially generating transfer income.
What is comforting is the fact that the higher the transfer fee Sunderland commands, the bigger the windfall for us thanks to the sell-on clause.
However, Sunderland might choose to retain Ekwah to further hone his skills and secure a larger transfer fee down the line.. The Hammers might have to wait a while or see Ekwah’s value increase before they see any money.
Nevertheless, all donations would be gratefully received!
A shrewd piece of business? If other top division sides are now trying to sign him . Would it not have been shrewd to have kept hold of him ?
This was reported here yesterday. Joke of site.
