“Sellotaped together” | Damning assessment sums up West Ham’s disastrous season

The trapdoor may not yet have been kicked shut by Tottenham, but West Ham’s loss to Newcastle means they are clinging onto Premier League survival by their finger tips pending the outcome of Tuesday night’s Chelsea v Spurs game.

The Hammers will spiral down for a season – at least – in the tough, unforgiving territory of the second tier of English football when their north London rivals pick up a solitary point, having a far superior goal difference. Even if Chelsea triumph on Tuesday, West Ham would need a last day win and another Tottenham loss against Everton to pull off a miracle.

The recriminations have started already: Troy Deeney, Watford striker turned pundit for CBS Sports, has pointed the finger at West Ham’s nasty, flawed habit of recruiting from failed, relegated sides and how it has led to their own almost inevitable demise:

The core of this team – the Fernandes, Summerville, Hermansen in goal, Kyle Walker Peters – they’ve been relegated in the last two years . The reason I don’t like that is they’re used to losing games. Its a trend – they ask ‘how do I get out of this’.. and they can’t.

When you start to look at this team it is a band of misfits: This team has been dragged, pulled and sellotaped together to try and make a team and unfortunately across the season the cracks have shown.

I’m really worried that West Ham could go down [again] next year – and not get promoted again”

Cold, hard criticism which puts the blame squarely at the door of the board. In any normal industry, such catastrophic failure would lead to wholesale resignations. No such chance. The only people left standing at the end of this disgraceful season are likely to be the board members who were responsible for creating it in the first place.

Brady jumped ship – the rest should follow her with their heads held in shame.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

I thought that we were going to get out of it, we had the momentum and four forms needed to change for it not to happen.

All of Leeds, Forest and Tottenham turned their forms around, all started winning games. Forest won 5-1 at Sunderland for Hells sake doesn’t happen with bottom of the league teams.

And we lost our momentum, we have lost the last three is relegation form there’s no getting away from it.

All four forms did turn around beggars belief, but that doesn’t stop me from being angry with the board because we didn’t blow it in the last three we blew it over the last two seasons if not longer due to frankly insane decision making.

I think Deeney might be right about next season. Most of the squad willl be sold and I have my doubts that the development squad graduates will be good enough to replace them and any incoming players will be even more bargain basement than usual. I’m sure Sullivan has already found some specials 😳

Agreed, Martin, all the board need to clear off as they have proved time and again their Incompetence.
Wouldn’t trust Kretinsky as far as I could throw him.
Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for the three promoted clubs last season being so shocking, we would have gone then. This has been in the making for years and now we need to clear the decks and start again.
It’s a disgrace what Sullivan and the rest of the”The Munsters” have done to our club.
Very hard to write a post and not use expletives !!
