Carabao Cup: Liverpool 5-1 West Ham

West Ham showed some promising glimpses during tonight’s 5-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

The Hammers were very much in the game at halftime, and even at 2-1, they arguably looked like the better team. However, despite some bright moments and encouraging play, the team reverted to the shambolic defending that has plagued the club for almost a year.

It seems irrelevant who plays in West Ham’s defence, as the same issues persist. Now, Julen Lopetegui is under increasing pressure to resolve these problems quickly.

Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo form a £75m central defensive partnership, yet the entire defensive unit was chaotic. It would not be unreasonable to suggest that the score could have been 7-1 were it not for Fabianski’s heroics in goal.

That said, the Hammers did have their moments. Danny Ings had a goal disallowed, Kilman and Summerville should have scored, and they once again looked threatening from set pieces.

However, immense pressure is now on Julen Lopetegui to secure a win against Brentford, especially after Edson Alvarez’s reckless red card made the task even more challenging. The Mexican midfielder’s foolish decision to lunge in on Mo Salah when he was already on a yellow card killed off any hopes West Ham had of getting back into the game even though the score line was already 3-1.

Despite his obvious discipline issues, the team will clearly miss him in Saturdays London derby and Lopetegui will once again have to shuffle his pack.

Never looked the better team, just the same old. Players never look comfortable on the ball, and no main striker of note. Strange how decent players come to West Ham and immediately seem to lose confidence in their ability. There’s a long term problem that’s been running for a while now. Unfortunately WH have been the worst team to watch in prem both last season and so far this…..sad.

I think Poch is now USA manager

Sorry I just ain’t got the words! I’ve posted on here a few times even before the wheels started to fall off that JLO might not be the right fit for us. As mentioned by other posts this whole s@@@ show is sooooo West Ham.
If we get turned over by Brentford & Ipswich he’s gotta go and I don’t care what the deranged “give him time” wallahs say ! ⚒⚒⚒

  • LevyGenius says:

The irony here is that if the Spanish Gareth Southgate doesn’t survive you will probably end up getting the real Gareth Southgate, which would be thoroughly entertaining…..Pochettino would be genius for club like West Ham, he won’t win you anything but he’ll improve the football, push u up the table to challenge for top 7 each year maybe even champs league at some point and a few cup runs.

Don’t patronize this team, they did not show promising glimpses and they never once looked like the better team, they were an unmitigated disaster from start to finish, even at one up. Yes, occasionally the ball ran their way and made them look better, but it was never planning or skill. To all those that love to take the moral high ground and tell the rest of us we should be more patient, do you get it yet or do you still want to wait until Christmas? Lopetegui has absolutely no clue how to fix this team. From his selections to his substitutions and his ranting on the touchline, there is only panic.
Now we know it is more than “toughness” missing from Todibo’s game. We can’t buy players until January so now it is damage limitation time and that starts with Brentford and Ipswich.

Great post Ray and 100% agree. Huge questions now for the board now after backing their choice of manager with £150 million to get the players that Lopetegui and Tim targeted including his ex Captain and if the board will continue to back him. Tbh top players are not going to want to join a team outside the top 8 in January and likelihood of Jhon Duran joining us now is almost zero.

We have a lot of experienced internationals on the pitch who also need to step up and show leadership as there seems to be zero communication. Nobes would be ripping into them on the pitch and in the dressing room and just shows how much we miss Dec.

  • Gaz says:

At the end of the day, the team is useless.
This will be a relegation battle that we need to lose.
Championship football. Lose the deadwood (average age 29). Lose the manager. Lose the owner.
    Phoenix.

    • Trevsheadwonthecup says:

Don’t talk tripe . Relegation in that stadium would be 10 x worse than all the others combined. We’ll be nowhere near the relegation places either .

You think we should get relegated 😂😂

  • Kip says:

Yes irrelevant who we play and who we play against it’s just so predictable…we are just **** ..end of …a game starts ans 7 times out if 10 we let a goal in ..in the first 10 min ….just all over the place…I turned of at 3_1 …from.whst I can see of his style at the min he’s no better than moyes …..bowen and summerville were the only players tobwork hard tonight….how do we keep getting caught in every game and outnumbered rushing back…its awful to watch

  • Essexiron42 says:

“Arguably looked like the better team”? at 2-1 down, touch optimistic especially as you then rightly go on to say we could have lost 7-1 in the end with our shambolic defending. Sick of seeing excuses for this manager, “give him time” we all said, yet all we see is no recognisable formation and the debacle at Chelsea and now getting beaten 5-1 by Liverpool’s reserves. Alvarez stupidly got himself sent off and the whole defence look as though they have never played together.

£120 million spent on buying his players and the only 2 who have impressed so far are Summerville and Wan Bissaka. At this rate we will face being relegated instead of fighting for European places.

  • CLARKYCAT says:

Is it time to start questioning Steidten? Some in these parts have hailed him as a transfer messiah, and I see limited evidence of that…too much influence and not enough nous. Most of the new intake look a bit flaky – Kilman apart

    • Jimbo2 says:

Tim wanted Amorim. It was convenient for Sully to leak the meeting so he could plough ahead with his preferred appointment of Lopi.

It’s now a question of how long we wait for him to admit he’s wrong.

    • dickcat says:

      you’re talking b@@@@@@@

    • S says:

It has been for a while but if this season keeps going the way it has he has to go, IMO. Most of our best players are still Moyes signings and even Kilman was one that Lopetegui insisted on from his time at Wolves. Otherwise Steidten outbid himself by paying 25m for an 18 year old in the U21s and 27m for a 31 year old striker with two decent seasons under his belt. Kudus is the only one I can truly say was a brilliant signing of his.

  • Jimbo2 says:

This whole shambolic scenario is so West Ham. It’s actually boring.

Tim wanted someone progressive and up and coming. Meanwhile Sully was interviewing Lopi since December. Major ticks being a) I’ve heard of him b) he’s coaches in the EPL.

Whole thing is tiresome and predictable.
