West Ham United‘s transfer window closed with a flurry of activity, including the loan of James Ward-Prowse to Nottingham Forest and the signing of Carlos Soler from Paris Saint-Germain.

You have to say that James Ward-Prowse’s loan move to Nottingham Forest was a surprising development. The midfielder contributed significantly to West Ham’s attack last season, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists. However, he may have struggled for playing time under Julen Lopetegui this season.

But he would have been a great option to bring on and fling in set pieces when chasing games. However, JWP is a better player than just a bench warmer and it was probably the best for all concerned to see him depart for Forest where I suspect he’ll do well.

Perhaps this is a signal that Lopertegui no longer wants West Ham to be seen as a set-piece side although with Tomas Soucek seemingly a J-Lo favourite, perhaps retaining Ward Prowse had its merits.

There is also the fact that the midfielders value was depreciating rapidly as he was used intermittently from the bench, the prospect of a season of set-piece excellence for Forest could benefit the Hammers financially in 12 months.

Notwithstanding that, Carlos Soler’s signing is a positive addition for West Ham. The Spanish midfielder has a strong track record and can provide creativity and goal-scoring threat. His arrival will no doubt help help the Irons improve our attacking options.
