Silence is Deafening | Kyle Walker Peters

Weeks ago when Flynn Downes was still a Hammer, speculation was rife about negotiations between The Irons and The Saints for a swap deal involving Flynn moving to St Marys and much – coveted defender Kyle Walker Peters moving to East London.

It is thought that Danny Ings was to be involved in the deal as a makeweight but the veteran striker had other ideas- whilst of course he wanted to keep his £120k a week salary at East London so probably didn’t fancy a wage cut the official line was that ‘he wanted to stay and fight for his place under Lopetegui‘.

The consequence that Downes went, we got paid, however no movement to agree a sale of the right back. Things went cold as West Ham headed off in pursuit of Aaron Wan Bissaka which hasn’t ended well for us.

Curiously, in the meantime, little has been seen or heard of Kyle Walker Peters. No other club has snapped him up, somewhat surprisingly in view of his £20 million price tag which is not enormous compared to some of the prices being paid this window – and at 27 he is at his peak with over 100 premier league games and an international call up under his belt.

Even his manager Russell Martin seemed surprised he was still part of the squad, saying:”We have a lot of interest in him as we did last summer, and then Kyle ended up staying, maybe to the surprise of everyone, myself included.”

Which doesn’t account for KWP missing all 5 of Saints’ pre-season friendly games and the Summer warm weather training in Spain.

Either he is injured -but his manager issued updates on all other unfit squad players’ recoveries except KWP- or Southampton have a behind-the-scenes issue with the player that they are keeping quiet about.

Very strange, especially when he would fit beautifully into Lopetegui’s new look squad and at 27 would get the seal of approval from me.

Not good enough for us. I’d just drop this one. A fraction, if not better than what we have, so why bother?
Wasn’t good enough for Spurs, doesn’t seem to be good enough for Southampton.

I disagree WP is a very good full back and would have been a top player for us. I think Martin is a Treasure and knows more than we do and I am sure he will reveal all before the window closes.

You’ve finally cracked it – decent article 🙂

  • Ian says:

Weren’t we told here that Ings would have still earned the same money by going to Southampton?

  • Attwood says:

    Not good enough. Simples

  • Charlie Farley says:

I still think we’ll get Wan-Bissaka in the next week

  • Pesdahammer says:

He’s too short for the Premier League he would be eaten up on crosses and corners.
AWB is acting like a mercenary just like Lingard and isn’t worth the money, I would try for the young Spanish defender mentioned yesterday.

    • Martin Treasure says:

News on that ‘Spanish Defender’ coming shortly…

      • elduder says:

we’ve clearly shelved AWB and are gunning for martinez

        hints:
        – leaked out of spain, spanish club/agent
        – lop already spoken multiple times with him and he’s keen
        – first bid submitted

why the leak? milan previously bid €5m, barcelona have him earmarked as a 3rd potential target, rumoured interest around €10m – club bidding war, player options

release clause €20m, contract expires 2025, girona trying to negotiate a new deal

personal opinion is a €12m bid will secure him, the fact that martinez has not accepted a new deal makes sale highly likely

      • elduder says:

        also – he’s under 21

don’t need to be registered for next season so HG limit not relevant for this player

  • Kenny Irons says:

Sorry, WP not up to scratch especially defensively, forget this one !

    • Kevin Wheeler-osman says:

Saints fan here, have to be honest kwp is a very good full back, but 20 mill with a year left on his contract is a joke,i think they are pricing him out of a move and he’s got the hump about it,my gut feeling is this one Will Go right to the end of the window, rather than lose him for nothing they will lower their price, but he’s had no pre season

  • Kip says:

I hate talking about this..I’m.sorry but I said at the time ..how dumb can our board be , selling downs to them on there terms and not include kwp ..its our own fault …they got what they wanted then play hard ball with kwp…why on earth sell them downs without including kwp ….dumb as fk

  • Rick says:

Best player in the championship last season

    • Matt says:

We’ve already signed the Player of the Championship from Leeds. I’d be happy to take KWP also though.

  • Ray says:

The question is, is KWP an upgrade on VC. That said, I wouldn’t pay more than £10-12M if we are talking £15M for AWB. Are there really no other UK born defenders that would fit?

  • Kevlar says:

I would take the young Spanish fullback for €12m Lopetegui knows what he wants!

  • Brendan says:

Sounds like Martinez on his way…he looks sound to me…

  • Arun Torgal says:

We should have gone for KWP but I guess we are going for Martinez of Gerona.
