Newcastle 2 West Ham 1
Lightning was never going to strike twice in the same week was it…but my God we are starting to make life hard for ourselves.
The Hammers have been out of the traps far too slowly on far too many occasions this season despite the lofty league position but this afternoon they were made to pay in full. Messages need preaching quickly and being accepted even faster.
Sadly Dimi Payet was not at his best as Newcastle scored twice in the opening 12 minutes through Perez and Wilnadum and although half time sub Nikicia Jelavic got one back soon after the interval after puncing on a sloppy back pass you never truly believed we were going to get that second.
We came close when Toon keeper Elliott was forced to make a great save on the goal line from Cheik Kouyate whom he had denied at the end of the first when turning a way a thunderous effort.
But apart from that we never convinced and never showed the sort of urgency required to pull back a team in relegation trouble who were on a serious mission today.
We are a team that now plays with a lot of patience but we need that special spark from Payet’s magical feet was missing today and as a result we lost all three points.
Disappointing of course but it’s at times like these that we need to stay strong and get behind the team that’s done us so proud over recent weeks and through a terrible injury crisis.
Soon we will have the main man back in Sakho and that is going to make a huge difference whilst Lanzini’s return is also eagerly awaited.
Sadly, however, we really should have shown a lot more today with those we had available and it was interesting too that there was no place for Winston Reid.
I’m afraid to say that we have to accept that when there is no Lanzini in the team and Payet is off his game we tend to look a bit ordinary.
However, we had to suffer a defeat at some stage and let’s hope we have now got it out of out system. Onwards and upwards – bring Citeh on and another famous double!
