Slow starting Irons pay in full

Match Verdict

Newcastle 2 West Ham 1

jelavic (1)Lightning was never going to strike twice in the same week was it…but my God we are starting to make life hard for ourselves.

The Hammers have been out of the traps far too slowly on far too many occasions this season despite the lofty league position but this afternoon they were made to pay in full. Messages need preaching  quickly and being accepted even faster.

Sadly Dimi Payet was not at his best as Newcastle scored twice in the opening 12 minutes through Perez and Wilnadum and although half time sub Nikicia Jelavic got one back soon after the interval after puncing on a sloppy back pass you never truly believed we were going to get that second.

We came close when Toon keeper Elliott was forced to make a great save on the goal line from Cheik Kouyate whom he had denied at the end of the first when turning a way a thunderous effort.

But apart from that we never convinced and never showed the sort of urgency required to pull back a team in relegation trouble who were on a serious mission today.

We are a team that now plays with a lot of patience but we need that special spark from Payet’s magical feet was missing today and as a result we lost all three points.

Disappointing of course but it’s at times like these that we need to stay strong and get behind the team that’s done us so proud over recent weeks and through a terrible injury crisis.

Soon we will have the main man back in Sakho and that is going to make a huge difference whilst Lanzini’s return is also eagerly awaited.

Sadly, however, we really should have shown a lot more today with those we had available and it was interesting too that there was no place for Winston Reid.

I’m afraid to say that we have to accept that when there is no Lanzini in the team and Payet is off his game we tend to look a bit ordinary.

However, we had to suffer a defeat at some stage and let’s hope we have now got it out of out system. Onwards and upwards – bring Citeh on and another famous double!

  1. Well sumoned up Hugh,
But we can learn from this and Slav seems to add more to his armour every game and I am sure he will learn from this result, apart from winning games from behind which we could not do this time,
We need a pre game talk similar to the half time ones as we seem to start every game in slow motion,
A day to forget and sorry Sam we could not do you a favour ( He He )

  2. 5 League defeats from 22 games. Only 3 away defeats.
Unbeaten in 9 Home games (League and Cup)

I honestly think had we had Sakho or Carroll today we would have got something from the game.

We are a striker away from being a top 6 team this season.

Hoping the stories about Tore and Zaza coming in the next few weeks are true. Get these two in plus Sakho, Lanzini and Carroll back and what a team we will have.

Top 6 or better will be ours for the taking.

    COYI!!!

    • I would rather get Morata or Batshuayi to come. Mortal is bored at Juventus (maybe Ogbonna can put in a word for us) and Batshuayi is the future centre forward for Belgium. Playing for Marseille (Payet, talk to him and convince him to come).

  3. I’m not as forgiving as some on here.
Club record on the line and they turn up with no fight.
Don’t think I have seen a more lacklustre performance since the tail end of last season.
I think Bilic missed a trick early on as he shouldn’t have accepted the situation early on and should have made an early change to rattle some cages. I was screaming for Reid to replace Collins as he was clearly struggling, was a liability for 10 minutes and pulled other defenders across to cover him. Both goals scored in that period.

Think it’s City next so today was really important.

  4. Heard the game on radio today ( plastic supporter )!
Sounded like noble had a nightmare ? Especially first half !
First goal put down to him ! Newcastle running past him at will ?
Kouate , noble , obiang letting them dictate terms to much space , not closing down early depriving them of ball , no pace that’s why noble always gives the opposition 3 yards in front
Blah blah blah ?? Second half Valencia getting done off the ball , coleback taking players outand not even getting a booking , a bblatant penalty not given !
Sounded like a bad bad day at the office !
We could and should have been trounced today !!
Cannot just rely on payet and lanzini , need to spend a few quid in the summer and strengthen defencive M/F with some grit and class . IMO.
We definitely need a extra classy c/f .
At least we showed some fight in the second half .

  5. A couple of weeks ago I wrote that we are still a team that blows hot and cold and that is the major problem Slav has to solve. This coming out and playing as if we just got out of bed, for the first half hour has been our Achilles heel for a long time now and as it’s a mental thing, it’s tough to cure

  6. Personally I think starting with Valencia up front and not jelivic didn’t help us. Valencia 1st touch is poor and he can’t hold the ball up and is also lazy. But hey we were bound to loose eventually and Newcastle have been playing well without getting the wins they have deserved. We really do need sakho back as soon as pos. we will just have to smash city next week.

  7. Shelvey was very influencial on the game but should not be on the pitch after his assault on Valencia ith his elbow. ref was right bang in line; how can he say he didn’t see it,Typical we are bottom of the table when it comes to vital decisions by refs. maybe the video panel may deal with it but that justs benefits the next teams they play but gives us no benefit whatsoever

    • All the more need for video as in rugby’??
It makes sense, don’t take a minute !! Why have the ref talk to noble and colichini when a video playback in less time would have said off on not ?
Penalty as well by all accounts !!
