West Ham Transfers

Conflicting stories are emerging surrounding the Hammers transfer activity in the upcoming window.

Yesterday Jacob Steinberg reported that the Irons have a small budget ahead of a summer recruitment drive. However, the news came on the same day West Ham were rumoured to have made Caoimhin Kelleher our top summer transfer target.

Liverpool reserve keeper Kelleher could be allowed to leave Anfield and they are likely to ask for around £20m. However this varies hugely from what Claret & Hugh were told by a London Stadium source last week who stated a goalkeeper “isn’t a priority”.

Surely if West Ham are indeed counting the pennies ahead of a transfer spend-up then splashing £20m on a keeper is an avoidable cost.

Whilst I do believe there is a need for an upgrade between the sticks at some point, Alphonse Areola was decent enough in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday. The Frenchman may be prone to an error and his kicking can be suspect but he certainly kept West Ham in the game at Anfield.

It is possibly a position which can be put off fixing for another twelve months with midfield, striker and left back/wing back far more pressing issues.

It’s always been clear, and likely will be going forward, that West Ham like many other clubs will need to sell before they can buy. Selling Kudus for example would free up money. One big benefit the summer should bring is a significant drop in the wages – unless we are daft enough to offer Ings and Antonio extensions.
