Snodgrass attacks dreadful defending

Robert Snodgrass has blasted the Hammers defence and snapped: “It’s very difficult to take because you are never going to get any better with mistakes like that.”

And he added: “When we’ve let the dust settle and assessed the game, I think we’ll be very disappointed with the goals we’ve conceded.

West Ham had led through a first half Marko Arnautovic penalty but two goals in six second half minutes, courtesy of some appalling defensive work, saw us lose all three points and Snodgrass was furious.

He said: “With the first one, their player has run 40 yards and we had five defenders against one attacker. At any level that’s criminal.

“The manager has tried to stop that sort of defending and it’s very difficult to take because you’re never going to get better with mistakes like that.

“We’ve probably worked on five hundred set pieces leading up to the season because he’s been wanting to stop that kind of goals and then we concede a goal – from a set piece.

“You just can’t defend like that and the boys know that as well.”

  1. anyone else liking Snodgrass’ refreshingly honesty approach?

Saying what needs to be said. It IS shambolic and both goals were amateur mistakes that we have seen time and time again.

  2. Well I suppose it is encouraging to know he is working on these things! Defending free kicks- my advice there is work on not giving them away. The invoice for that piece of expert advice will be with you shortly Mr P. Payment by return of post please.

  3. As bad as the defending was, it might be better for the squad if players kept this sort of stuff between themselves.

  4. How about sticking a few in the net for us instead of blaming the rest . Blame is easy to apportion if it leaves you in peace . Football is all about scoring goals , and if you can’t do that it doesn’t matter a jot about the defense . The better and bigger teams rely more on scoring than defending . Score enough and the game is yours . The defenders could argue that the attack doesn’t score enough goals to defend . We only scored thanks to a penalty .
Go back and have a rethink . That goes for Pelligrini as well .

  5. So it’s the forwards fault for making 2 schoolboy errors and conceeding 2 ridiculous goals eh? The fact we scored from a penalty is immaterial. the point is, we did score and were winning and on our way to 3 points until said schoolboy errors. I’m not usually into the blame game but how can you possibly defend our defenders by attacking our attackers?

  6. Yes it was bad defending and the goalkeeper should have stopped the first goal. However, that is just masking the fact that the Bournemouth deserved their win and we were terrible. It doesn’t matter who the manager is, it doesn’t matter what players are in the team – we play the same dreadful slow ponderous football.

  7. Correct E20. And that is what MP is trying to address but some think he should get the Spanish archer after only 2 games. We have to give him some leeway.
