So just how bad was Roberto?…the PlayerWatch verdict

CandH’s regular Playerwatch reporter Danny Leach puts a horror show under his microscope

10 – GOAL – 1-0 – Barnes pokes the ball right past him to put the home side in the lead

17 – Catches comfortably a potent shot from range by McNeil

28 – Comes out of his goal to play a ball near the half way line as Burnley clear the ball away

43 – GOAL – 2-0 – Roberto throws the ball out to Balbuena who loses it to McNeil after a horrendous first touch. McNeil, through on goal, crosses the ball to Wood who puts it past Roberto as he made a very poor attempt at saving the shot

54 – GOAL – 3-0 – Roberto scores an own goal after he makes a terrible punch on the ball to send it spinning right behind him into the net

58 – Gets down to his near post to save Wood’s shot after shrugging off Balbuena

59 – Punches the ball away from a corner and makes a great save to stop Bardsley’s follow up shot going into the bottom left corner

61 – Puts the ball over the bar after a powerful shot by Wood’s

62 – A fourth goal by Burnley from a corner is ruled out after Barnes pushes Roberto as Mee puts the ball in the net

71 – Balbuena heads a ball out for a corner despite having the option to give it back to a hesitant Roberto

82 – Saves a curling shot in to the top corner by Hendricks near the edge of the box

Verdict – 2 – He was one of the main villains in our team today in a display which was incredibly difficult to find words for. He made unforgivable errors for all three of Burnley’s goal. Despite making a few decent saves, his continued errors in goals are painful to watch and he is simply not a suitable replacement for Fabianski. The continued vocal taunting by the Burnley fans and the fact that his own team mate Balbuena did not trust him enough to head the ball back to him demonstrates how humiliating his performance was.

  1. I have said this before. Roberto has a reputation in Europe as a very unreliable goalkeeper. Why on earth would West Ham offer him a contract? Simple incompetence in the scouting department. Maybe our 3rd keeper could not do any worse?

  2. Gamble that has hurt us. Sold off all fringe of the squad and all higher wage earners at the end of contracts. Bare bones squad as Harry would have said , offering our 2 left backs new long term deals
has amazed all. Noble announces he wants more involvement with the decision making at the club smells of trouble making . Pellegrini will not be at west ham until the end of the season. He clearly hasn’t had the funds required to fulfill the long held desires of the huge support to challenge for a European place. Had to sell too many of the squad to satisfy the owners.

  3. We have to be realistic about the amount of shots that this guy is being asked to save. We were always losing this match.

On the positive said it shows us that Fab is one of, if not the best keeper in the premier league, as well as arguably West Hams history.

  4. I think Roberto has been made a scapegoat for our absolute dismal performances of late…
He is certainly not a Fabianski but is Cresswell ( so weak defensively) Balbuena ponderous, Diop dithering, and any others any better. Goalkeeper’s mistakes are highlighted because generally they may lead to a goal… But if I am correct Fabianski at least made the third highest amount of saves compared to other goalkeeper’s per last season which highlights how weak our defencecive midfielders and defenders are.. Not to mention how easily Lanziini, Anderson and Masuaka are knocked off the ball.!!

Oh yes and our Pellegrini is a fantastic tactical man.
    Give me strength.
According to Sean though the players will regroup, train hard, get their confidence levels up and bounce back and give the Spuds a footballing lesson… in a fortnights time… At least we will not get beat this weekend. LOL..

  5. Sorry, Fabianski has been the most active goalkeeper over the past few seasons, making a staggering 148 saves last year in 38 games played… More than any other goalkeeper. We are trying to paper over the cracks..
I want to be proven wrong but Pellegrini WILL NOT BE ABLE TO turn things around even if he is given another 100, million tactically inept move on.. Please.

  6. Can’t really argue with anything that’s been said…Time to give Martin a chance or even recall Trott
