Some serious explaining needed after Irons Cup chaos

Calamity doesn’t begin to describe the Oxford defeat

All the warning signs were out there and most of them it seems were ignored!

But 4-0? I mean, really how on earth do you get your head around that despite Oxford having scored six in their last game and 19 in total.

A TV blackout and the absence of any audio saved us from having to watch what was clearly an absolute shambles of a performance from a team whom we had though may be learning to put such situations behind them.

But watching the brief moments available on YouTube Hammers supporters will only be left shaking their heads in abject misery and despair – we looked awful for all four goals, failing to learn lesson after lesson from a team more than up for it.

That there should be no TV or radio commentary is pretty ridiculous in itself – truly a return to the dark ages and seriously bad news for the sponsors Carabao ….somebody somewhere really needs to get their act/s together.

You can only come to one conclusion, that you either take the competition seriously or don’t bother with it at all but from a club and manager desperate for a trophy after all these years some explaining needs to be done.

The competition has thrown up shock results over and over again. So far this  round we have seen ourselves, Bournemouth and of course Spurs beaten but it’s of no comfort.

Wholesale change for the match was disrespectful of Oxford and we paid a heavy price just as we have over the last three years.

Defeats like these are becoming an annual event and it has to stop. You simply can’t go from getting top Premier League results  to the pits without there being something very wrong in the group’s mentality.

It’s a serious problem and the wicked irony is that two teams with something MAJOR to prove to their fans – ourselves and Bournemouth clash at the weekend.

Victory will probably see last night put behind us – defeat will see all the old fears and anxieties raising their heads again.

Fortune may not be hiding but it has certainly disappeared behind a self imposed cloud for now.

  1. Poor attitude and no effort Hugh , the lads really need to put a showing together against Bournemouth. Nothing less then a wn will do !

  2. Agree totally, my son made a very long journey to watch it, he was pretty angry, not sure it can easily be put behind us without some kind of hangover to league form

  3. back to reality, our only realistic chance of silverware and we have blown it again
we are not going to get relegated so why not put out a strong team for the cup competitions as our supporters would love the opportunity for a trip to Wembley..

  4. It should be obvious to us all that West Ham had no ambition to win this game and make strides in the Cup despite all the promises to really go for silverware this time . We have not only been lied to , we have been let down and ignored . Nine changes to a winning team does not show a willingness to win . A total lack of respect was shown to both Oxford and our fans alike . You can’t suddenly put out a different team and expect them to knit together with the same cohesion and mentality as the normal league game teams . The priority to do well in the League came first with the fear of more injuries . Pelligrini should be very unhappy with himself this morning ., because I know we are not happy .
Hopefully , seeing as it was a different team , it won’t effect us too much for the Bournemouth game .

    What don’t you get ?
Oxford made 6 changes,a League 1 team. those on duty and I’m excluding Holland here should of been able to comfortably beat Oxford,no excuse witht he amount of changes.

  6. We are all saying the same thing. So can somebody pass this on to the relevant people at the club please. The majority of that team capitulated in the same manner against Wimbledon last season.Surely that was a last chance for this group to play together as a 2nd team.He kept 2 players from Sunday and played a bunch who have barely kicked a ball this season against an in form team like Oxford. You either go all out to win a competition with your best players or dont bother at all.We do not have the luxury of a quality back up team like some.In all honesty. The U23s would have put up a much better show I am sure.

  7. I feel sorry for the fans that travelled to watch it. Admittedly the team selection wasn’t as bad as allardyce’s in 2014 at forest but that team on paper should have been good enough to win, let alone put a shift in and give a decent fight. It’d never happen but those that were responsible should be using their appearance bonus to refund the admission prices of those who made the effort to watch the team.

  8. People are blaming the players? The team that was thrown onto the pitch was an assortment of second string players that collectively have had next to no gametime, are lacking confidence, fitness and for many of them, they lack basic technical ability. There was no gameplan from Pellegrini, he just rolled the dice and hoped for the best. We are sitting comfortably in the league and had the luxury of actually going for it in this competition. But no, the ethos is most certainly about finishing 7th as opposed to 8th. There is no money in domestic cup competitions, which means there is zero interest from the club. They don’t give a crap about the support. I would rather finish 15th and have a day out at Wembley. But no, it’s all about climbing a place or two in the PL. Pathetic from Pellegrini!
