Midfield Overhaul | Tornado Under Threat

Tomas Soucek‘s position at West Ham United is under threat following a summer of significant midfield recruitment. The Czech midfielder, once a pivotal figure in the Hammers’ lineup, now faces increased competition for a starting place.

The arrival of Guido Rodriguez from Real Betis has disrupted the established midfield order, with the Argentine offering a different skill set and profile. Additionally,  persistent rumours abound regarding the club’s pursuit of other midfield targets such as Carlos Soler and Sergio Roberto suggests that Soucek’s role could be further marginalized: Indeed he may already have been inked into the ‘probably for sale’ column to recoup funds.

With a contract running until 2027, West Ham are in a strong negotiating position. However, the club may be open to selling Soucek if a suitable offer arrives, particularly if it allows them to reinvest in other areas of the squad.

The 29-year-old will need to carefully consider his options. While he has been a loyal servant to the club, the prospect of reduced playing time could tempt him to seek a new challenge. Ultimately, the decision may be taken out of his hands with Lopetegui already showing he is a Head Coach prepared to take an uncompromising stance over the shape and style of the squad he is fashioning.

29 year old is the clue. Not much sell on fee hereafter.

  • Manager Jeff says:

I think he played the full 90 against Celta Vigo? Might read into that J-Lo wanting to have a good long look at him. Or not. Can always read anything into anything.

He’s been a great player for us, a real warrior, and loves the club. Don’t forget Arsenal were rumoured to be after him a few years back. And he started scoring more last year again. Let’s see what the new manager makes of him.

I think Soucek is a great old fashioned midfielder who contributes at both ends but he has his limitations and that is using the ball when he wins it or tracking back as he isn’t blessed with a lot of pace. He was badly treated under Moyes to pander to Rice but I think in a system where ball retention and quality, is what I think we all agree we would like to see, sadly Soucek will be behind the other players we have or are looking at and at 28 and a fair bit left on his contract we will never have a better position to get a bit of return for him. So sadly for me I think it’s time to move him on.

    Once again, lemme repeat …
The Moyes blue eye boys brigade must totally be dismantled and discarded of in order for West Ham to progress to the high standards the new Sporting director and head Coach intends.
The entire back line, needs to be replaced. (maybe Coufal + Emerson kept)
The soft midfield is also to blame for many of the WH goals agains, last term (74) And that midfield including Soucek, Alvarez + Jwp. Too many easy run thru’s to place, resulting in of course goals against. Paqueta needs to sort out his life, and general consistent performances. The Brazil team are also suffering due to big boy attitudes without big boy performances.
Bowen should also buck up on his pressing and defensive work, as Kudus does. Antonio + Ings should go.
No, and I dont callously comment in terms of these players, but as a former player and coach myself, you cannot improve going forward, carrying favourites or sentiments.
It’s a new era with much expectation. Coyi.
    God bless West Ham 🙏⚒⚽️🔥🏆

  • Neil Down Under says:

Whatever his future, he has done what we ask of any player who pulls on the shirt, he always gives us 100%
For this reason alone he becomes a part of that elite, who will, wherever he goes (except the Spuds) always be a Hammer.
He is a Fornals type character for me, a gentleman of the game, but a warrior on the pitch.
I remember in his first season he refused to walk over the club insignia of Man City as they walked out onto the pitch, that’s class. It’s a sign of how he recognises how important the badge is to the team.
He has never let us down with his effort, and I would be more than happy if we see more of him this season.

  • Dudley Tyler says:

Scored ten goals across all competitions last year, seven in the PL. When you have a midfielder scoring significantly more than the main striker (Antonio) that’s going to attract some interest. In rankings he is exactly halfway in the PL, 223 out of 446. But where he performs poorly is in things like Expected Assists (29th percentile) and successful passes and completed passes (both around 24th percentile). Defensively his numbers are pretty good. However that pass completion in a team that is moving towards a more possession based model, is that going to be the flashing red light for Tomas?

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

There is no evidence to suggest Soucek is going anwhere and I suspect he and Coufal will stay with us because even if he isn’t quite as good as some others with the ball at his feet he is great at breaking up play, a significant threat at set pieces both defensively and offensively and he gives 100% every game. I like both him and Coufal as a team they have a positive effect on their team mates because they lead by example and are hard as nails. Coufal who isn’t mentioned in this article but is being similarly talked about as being on their way out yet Coufal against teams where we expect to be attacking more gives more of an offensive threat than AWB, similarly if you expect to be winning a lot of dead ball opportunities you want Soucek attacking them. I hope we keep Tom and Vlad COYI !!!

      Couldn’t agree more!

      • Jeeps says:

Would like Sergio Roberto to be signed, not age wise, but due to his versatility.
Loyalty is something that can’t be recognised in this rebuild.
Left back position has not been strengthened leaving just Emerson.
Roberto being able.to cover multiple positions would solve this problem
Carlos Soler or Soucek is debatable.
1 right back is not sufficient therefore Coufal to stay.
