West Ham United midfielder Tomáš Souček has put his name forward to be a starter in midfield after expressing his desire to play a more expansive role under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Whether the big Czech can see the writing on the wall for future in the team is uncertain, but he was eager to make the point that he’s not just a ‘hoof it’ merchant.

In an interview with the official website, Souček highlighted his suitability for a more possession-based midfield role, similar to the one he plays for the Czech Republic national team.

They speak about me about goals or assists, but that’s not all I want to do,” Souček said. “I like to play from the goalkeepers and be the heart of the team, so that’s what I love. Sometimes people don’t see or don’t appreciate all of the work I try to do on the ball”

Some believe Souček’s skillset is better suited for a more defensive midfield role, pointing to his high work rate and aerial presence. Unfortunately for the Czech international, the Hammers have a specialist in Edson Alvarez who is better suited to the task.

Recent forays int the transfer market for midfielders Aleix Garcia and N’Golo Kante certainly indicate that Soucek could be replaced sooner rather than later. However, listening to Big Sou’s interview, it would appear that he’s ready to fight for his place.

Souček’s comments suggest he’s keen to learn and adapt to Lopetegui’s system. Most commendable, but I fear that would be like teaching an old dog new tricks.

Souček’s comments does raise questions about his future under Lopetegui, who is known for favouring possession-based football. Whether Souček can adapt to this new role will go a ling way to determining his Hammers future. The club may still consider signing a central midfielder who can better control the tempo in the middle of the park

An ideal squad player who will provide a number of options.

One option is an impact substitute – remember all the late goals that he has scored for us.

Plus an unbelievable work rate – check out the distance he covers.

    J-Lo will see his qualities.

As good as another centre back when defending and excellent at arriving in the box just at the right time, but ball playing midfielder… Doubtful.
