As previously reported by C&H, multiple outlets now confirm that Southampton have turned down a £30m bid from West Ham for Mateus Fernandes. The offer would have represented a 100% return on the fee the Saints paid for the Portuguese midfielder just last summer.
If Southampton are indeed holding out for closer to £50m, that valuation could significantly narrow the pool of potential suitors. West Ham have declined to comment on the specifics of their bid, yet it is believed to have included performance-based add-ons rather than the full £30m upfront.
Unwilling to enter a bidding war—especially with other clubs circling—West Ham are understood to be shifting their attention to alternative midfield options.
The Hammers previously withdrew from negotiations for Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott after the Premier League champions set a £50m asking price for the England U-21 international.
One player now under consideration is Lille’s Ngal’ayel Mukau. C&H can confirm that the 20-year-old midfielder is on West Ham’s radar and would be available for around €20m. Mukau impressed in a recent friendly against West Ham, showcasing his ability to drive from deep and score in a penalty shootout.
On the outgoing front, keeping everything crossed- there has been an initial approach from a Saudi club regarding Guido Rodriguez. With only a year left on his contract, West Ham are keen to move him on to free up space and wages.
With three weeks left in the window, West Ham are expected to bring in a new midfielder before the deadline—though whether that will be Fernandes remains uncertain. There are, indeed, other options-news of one of them shortly!
PSR has affected every team in the world bar Saudi Pro League and so Southampton should take Westham’s 30 million and run or else they’ll end up with nothing but a p1ssed off player .
Yes agree 30 million absolute tops
He’s a very good player but still to prove he is a proven premier league player
I would still like us to go for Mason Mount !!
Weve had all window to solve a big promblem now the season starts Saturday Poor planning Could and probably will kill our season
So far it’s proving tricky to offload players. Worrying.
Let’s be real, who remembers this player from last season, we were banging average and I still don’t remember him.
He’s a championship player at Southampton who’s done zip.
Move on to someone new, they’re never getting 50m for him.
Eze is available at 55…..
I think they are looking to bring in two midfielders Matt, if they can shift any of those surplus to requirement. Southampton are taking the middle k and risk having an unhappy player in their midst if they price him out of a move. I don’t see anyone paying even £30 million for him……yet. Club can’t afford to waste their time, tell Southampton there is £xxxx on the tablevfor him but not interested in negotiating and will move on.
Decent player but that doesn’t represent value. In a few seasons, if he performed, he would be sold for profit unless we’re competing at the top end of the table. Hard to make money on such an expensive outlay, even if he was the second coming of Zidane. We need to shift at least 2, possibly 3 bodies from center mid. If we get rid of 3 then we can sign 2 and Potts gets regular football too, we might even make some dough in the process. Irving surely goes, hopefully Rodriguez (to where I don’t know), and possibly Alvarez, although I personally would love us to keep him. I don’t think there is a market for JWP and he seems to be a Potter favourite. Soucek scores goals and despite his limitations, he can help us to pick up points. Cornet and Emerson still need to be shipped out, as well as some of the youngsters. I think we’ll be active right up to the last knockings of the deadline. I’m not overly worried about the window, especially if we get the lad in from Lille, he looks very good. Meanwhile, some other teams in the league are have a truly awful window. Brentford, Bournemouth, and Wolves have had a fire sale on their best players, Palace soon following suit. We’ve only lost one headless chicken and some retirement candidates.
Move on swiftly he’s barely a 30m pound player in an inflated market never mind 50
