Spectacular Coventry boosts Hammers chances

Conor Coventry’s spectacular overhead goal line clearance was a key factor as  MK Dons continued their big push for automatic promotion from EFL League One at the weekend

The Republic of Ireland U21s captain heroically cleared as a goal looked certain inside the first 10 minutes as the team went on to beat Cambridge United via a 1-0 win on Saturday, with Liam Manning’s side scoring the decisive goal on the hour mark.

Coventry will now head off on international duty – alongside Academy of Football teammate Mipo Odubeko – as the Boys in Green continue their push for qualification to the 2023 UEFA U21 European Championships in Georgia & Romania with a vital game in Sweden.

He has been a regular in the Dons side since his loan spell at surely relegation-bound Peterborough United was cut short in the winter.

Since then he has thrived in Liam Manning’s side and shown signs that he is ready to receive a chance with the Hammers first team squad next season after impressing during pre-season last term.

The switch from relegation doomed Posh to the dons may well have proved the move which can help him into the first team squad at the London Stadium this summer.

Elsewhere in League One, Nathan Holland came off the bench for the final five minutes of Oxford United’s 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town – helping his side claim a last-gasp equaliser.

  1. Like I said before Coventry should be helping out the 1st team squad Now. I also said his half a season would be a waste. Peterborough cried so much to have him so other teams in the Championship didn’t take him on. Poor management on both sides.

  2. Yes we really missed the boat this season by not giving sub time to Coventry but lending him, plus Alese, Ashby, Longelo and Okoflex at a minimum. They all have virtually no first team time – we’ve wasted it on Masuaku and Fredericks who need moving on. Short sighted and wasteful.

  3. I couldn’t of put it better hammerpete. A wasted season for our u23s. Top of their league playing well. If you’re not going to play them then then when. Moyes is extremely poor at using his squad, subs and u23’s. Our season could of been even better and future more so.

  4. I hope he does get a chance with us, whenever I have seen him play he looks like a new and improved Mark Noble type, tigerish in tackles and a good passer of the ball, certainly a huge upgrade on Alex Kral who is not upto PL standards.
