Striker chase poses a question

|

Anderson is perfectly capable of playing as a striker.

By Daniel Danielli Leach

Manuel Pellegrini is allegedly on the hunt for another striker ahead of the transfer window closing next Thursday.

Time is getting short and a few worried frowns are appearing but should we fail to sign a frontman I can’t believe it will be some sort of disaster.

No doubt there will be a heavy discussion about it as deadline day draws nearer but the question really is whether a backup striker is really necessary. Let’s examine the situation!

Excluding the injured Carroll, we have Chicharito, Arnautovic and Martinez who are all out and out strikers and having watched a lot of Italian football I can promise you that Felipe Anderson is also capable of playing in that role.

In his final appearance for Lazio against Inter Milan, he was deployed in the position and scored in a 2-3 defeat.

In fact, like Arnie, the club’s record signing can play right across the front line which brings a new and more versatile application to the team.

We also have Michal Antonio who has done a very decent job in the role and although some will argue that Martinez is not ready only time will prove that.

I think we have enough and it would be good to see the young Spaniard getting a chance here and there ( remember his goal against Mainz?). Promoting youth in most cases should be encouraged!

We are apparently open to offers for Jordan Hugill but with no clear interest we should assume he will still be with us for now.

Even without Hugill and Martinez we still have four players who can play as a striker and that’s not including Carroll. So maybe our chase for a back up really isn’t as urgent as some are believing.

I would take Perez from Arsenal, if he finds his true form he gives us a different dimension than Hernandez for games where we need more mobility up top,I also think he would work better with Arnie than Hernandez does.

I believe the difference is to complete with the top 6 (I know I’m being ambitious here) you need 3
    Quality players in that position.

Let’s face it we have the worst luck in the premier league with injury’s, that’s why we need quality cover and not just make so back ups.

Yes good point, if you look at City, they have Aguero, Jesus, Sterling all of which have some different skills, Utd have Rashford, Martial, Lukaku and Sanchez, Liverpool, Firminho, Salah, Mane, Sturridge, Arsenal, Aubameyang, Wellbeck, Perez, Lacazette. We have Hernandez,Arnie and Carroll the latter of which is always injured but you can see if we had another quality option it would cover us and give us a variety of ways to hurt teams, we need another player that might chip in with 15 goals perhaps it is Perez if he stays fit, Anderson has a lot of skills but history says he is a 10 – 12 goal a season player, Yarmolenko has a greater track record fo goals per games, the thing Perez gives us that is lacking in our team is he is left footed against some teams that will be an advantage which for a tactician like Pellegrini he would find ways to exploit we could hope ?

Well if we are looking for quality that should be enough to dispel these rumours of Perez. I thought Fredericks was the worse signing of the summer but this would beat it on the principal we are prepared to pay a fee for him. I really worry for us if this happens. We don’t need a 9 as badly as we need a 10 and a DM. I cannot believe we are a few days away from the transfer deadline and we have not signed two quality players in these positions. It is incredible and does not reflect well on the new management team. We need a top midfielder and a top 10, the lad Bernard ticks all the boxes for me. Why not put the 8m we are considering spending on Perez + salary on Bernard – imo makes total business sense.

I think you will soon learn how wrong you are about fredericks. I think he could be the best right back we have ever had. He could prove the best signing on the window

Perhaps you’re forgetting Yarmolenko who started as a striker for dynamo Kiev. He can play all roles across the front three apparently.

  • Trevor From England says:

Clive is right……Yarmolenko is another option. However I’m sure that Pellegrini would’ve highlighted at least two potential signings, in which case the club will sign one. The next few days will be interesting- and I’m expecting possibly up to four first teamers to leave….. Hugill, Byram, Fernandes and even Snodgrass or Obiang (despite reports to the contrary)

After the last big signing a few weeks ago DS made one of his rare statements in this window. I thought at that point that the cheque book was going back in the safe. I hope I am wrong & that another striker comes in. As somebody states above, we have a bad record on injuries & we are gambling on Arnautovich &Hernandes staying fit . AC is already out for several months & he will be due at least one more spell on the sidelines. So we are gambling on two strikers, one each side of 30, to see us through most of the season. We have one or two others who could do a job for us, but if one of the two main men get a bad injury we will be struggling in a big way. I realise the club has spent big & funds are limited, but we are not talking £30m or £40m. Just a decent back up. I will be surprised if either a striker or CDM comes in & amazed if we got both. But one would be good & would round off a good transfer window.
