Amid recent revelations that Graham Potter was hesitant about signing a centre-forward, West Ham are ironically – and irritatingly – nearing a deal for Callum Wilson: The veteran Premier League goal scorer is believed to have accepted personal terms on a contract which is heavily linked to appearances and goals.
Rubbing salt into the wounds is the news that Hammers’ long term striker target Evann Guessand is reportedly in talks with Crystal Palace who are keen to close a deal for the Nice striker.
The player identified by Kyle Macaulay has all the attributes to make a big impact in the Premier League. In all competitions last season he scored 13 times with 10 assists.
Guessand, an Ivory Coast international is nearly a decade younger than Wilson, and at 6ft 2 offers a commanding presence which would arguably align to Potters tactical preferences. His ability to play wide on the right offers versatility, a trait Potter highly values.
With Palace now in the driving seat, West Ham will need to move fast if they don’t want to lose out to their London rivals. Yet with a deal close for Wilson, a late U turn seems, sadly, increasingly unlikely.
There are no words if we end up with Wilson as our only incoming striker. If we end up with him at all it will be beyond a joke.
Rejoice that Sullivan has once again pulled a master stroke with the signing of Wilson and praise him that we have dodged a bullet by not going after guessand, I wonder who Wilson’s agent has planned for our midfield rebuild, I’m hoping they too are over 30 and have an horrendous injury record! As that’s the way forward apparently
I’m done with Sullivan joke mate he needs to change his mind . Should go for a young guy with potential and sell on value . Wilson FFS
Potter had marked him down as one who was wanted.
Big miss.
Still need him even if Wilson is on his way.
Presumably Nice are expecting a fee, so that’s a no go for us anyway.
I’ve waited since January for the top target Evann guissand to be signed up and once again we’ve missed out and end up with a over the hill thirty something that’s injured all season.Fuming 😡
Given that West Ham are linked with so many players it is always hard to know which ones are our priorities, but it is clear which positions we need to fill and who is within our price range. It is therefore frustrating when we are linked with a player for a long period of time only to find another club sealing the deal seemingly almost overnight. We need to learn from the likes of Aston Villa and even, these days, Crystal Palace, who go about their business quietly and quickly without the perennial dithering and “smoke and mirrors” that seem to typify West Ham’s transfer dealings.
