There is something happening at Umbro. Whether they are all quaffing too many Red Bulls or there’s something in the afternoon tea, who knows. But very rarely over the years do West Ham United ever get THREE kits which are universally loved.
Who can forget the Prague white and orange ‘flame’ shirts which we’d all rather consign to the bin but which, maddeningly, with not a hint of claret or blue, will live forever in the photos? Yuk.
Take a look at the claret and blue home kit this year, however, and it is universally acclaimed as a thing of retro beauty and subject to finding another hundred quid, quite tempting and something the millions of extra global Hammers fans we will generate (as a result of our transfer dealings this summer) will flock to buy.
Not quite as pretty, the away strip in black appears with claret trim and is quite wearable. Call me old fashioned but whatever happened to sky blue as an away kit?
But the new third kit, officially unveiled today, is the one for me. White shirts with claret collar and cuffs (with the merest hit of a gold trim) when matched with the strip’s claret shorts, stunning. Admittedly for the PR shots the green QuickBooks arm badge is, conveniently, hardly visible.
Selling on the whufc.com site for £75, it is still better value than food and drink at London Stadium and as long as I don’t try and wash and iron it, likely to outlast the season. Another one for my collection, maybe, which stands at eleven and counting – most of which are too small. It isn’t me getting larger, you understand, they all just shrink in the wardrobe.
Universally loved? What a weird thing to say. Personally, don’t like this one. Home Kit is awesome, away kit pretty good, this is meh.
I really dislike the away kit. Just don’t like black. I’m old enough to remember when the only person in a black shirt was the referee.
But I have to agree about the other two kits.
Why Gold? Our colours are claret and blue.
The gold in the badge, of the actual hammers.
I don’t understand why they went with gold when sky blue would have worked just as well, and is actually part of the Club colours, unlike gold. And sky blue should be our standard away kit also.
Outside of first team affairs, this Club makes so many poor decisions (concessions being the latest).that I doubt the competency of those working there. Whoever thought we should play our first euro final in decades in that ridiculous kit should be sacked.
Without any proof, I blame Brady and her litany of sycophants.
This is brilliant. Buying a home and third kit for the first time in a long while now. I’m really excited for this season now!
Not for me. It’s a bit vulgar and brash with the gold and claret. Never liked the 70’s collars that a lot of teams’ shirts had back then, and never wanted to see them again! lol
The only kit I really like is the classic home retro design.
Nice 3rd kit
Personally I don’t think the famous away kit of pale blue with 2 hoops is the best kit ever. I suppose its an age thing. And I remember Sir Bob wearing it.and looking superb in it.
We as a family all went to Potters resort a couple of years back and my 10 years old grandson had his one on. Those of you who’ve been there will know the compare (Mark or Paul, Brewer) is a huge hammers fan. Every time the kids got called up on stage for whatever reason they got a sweet or a lollipop. But because he had that shirt on he got 2 sweets!!! Even at 10 it never took him long to suss it out. We couldn’t get it off his back all week end. Breakfast lunch and evening meal. Wouldnt even let us rinse it through for him. The mark of the shirt eh!!!
**Should I DO think the old away kit**
If they had the option to buy a shirt without the sponsors logo on arm or chest etc be interested to see how they would do in sales compared to those with all that on it….for me i would have it without the logos
