Latest reports out of Italy suggest, ironically, that the hold up on the Crysencio Summerville sale might not be coming from West Ham United or from Roma, so much as from the players’ entourage.
Summerville has, by all accounts, been offered a £3.8 million salary package but is holding out for £5.1 – six million euros – and it is that which is holding up a deal rather than the two clubs being wildly apart on transfer fees. Most of this seems Italian media driven – gazzetta.it principally, and one senses could easily be agent-led to try and lever the best for their young World Cup star.
What has emerged – apparently – is an expiry date on his release clause which if true further ratchets up the focus – since allegedly the expiry is on 27th July – nine days from now.
Training ahead of this summer recess- will Summerville be off by the end of the month?
Assuming he has to go – he’s an ambitious young man who has seemingly set his sights on taking ‘show time’ back to the top tier somewhere in Europe- then there looks to be an end in sight.
Which will come as a blessed relief to West Ham supporters and those of us who write about these things, to be honest – getting a Summerville sale over the line will be akin to popping a nasty blister – unpleasant but once done, enabling player, club and supporters to walk off and embrace life after.
I can’t be the only one on the fringes muttering ‘get it done, for heavens sake‘ so that we can focus on the good news – the captain staying, the new board room regime, 50,000 season ticket holders, the chances of being favourites and winning games next season instead of interminable backs-to-the-wall rearguard actions ending in multiple fails to cling on.
Of course I’d wish he’d stay but..please let it be true that the 27th July ‘expiry’ of Summerville’s clause proves the catalyst to see him off to pastures new and the whole saga done and dusted.

Remember that the main reason we never saw the best of him last season was his self-inflicted prolonged injury recovery, when he declined to have surgery that would have seen him back months earlier.
