The Mackems are determined to keep the 23 year old at the club if possible but will face intense pressure from the Hammers Brentford and Burnley before deadline day.

The Hammers have been linked with the player since the window opened and could well find the Irons are back in before next Thursday.

Clarke has been in new contract talks with the Black Cats since last summer but with clubs circling it looks unlikely he will remain a Championship player with such interest from the Premier League.

He has so far scored  13 goals in 29 Championship games this season but the club has srill failed to complete a contract extension with him.

However, they are continuing to talk down a departure for their star man with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman declaring the club as determined to hold on to their best players.

He said: ‘I get the news about selling players but our ambition is to retain our best players, develop them, go higher in the league.

‘I get the nervousness around selling players but there are players we all love and our ambition is to retain them and keep developing.’
