Supporter receives life ban for DVD Spurs slur

A West Ham season ticket holder has been fined after pleading guilty to a racially aggravated offence at a Carabao Cup game against Spurs at the London Stadium last October.

The Crown Procession Service brought the charge after Met police received a complaint from another West Ham fan about the supporter aiming abuse at Spur’s Son Heung-min. The court fined the supporter £184 and ordered him to pay £110 in costs at Thames magistrates court after he admitted to referring to Son as “DVD”.

Following the case, West Ham gave the supporter a life ban from the London Stadium but have also offered him the chance to attend an education course with Kick it Out. If he completes this and signs an acceptable-behaviour agreement the ban will be reviewed.

  1. One word: Unreal

  2. I’m a spurs fan. What is the country coming to when you can’t make a simple harmless joke

  3. A life ban from West Ham? Why reward him?

  4. Dare I ask what a DVD is? I’m assuming it’s not a box set.

    • Son wound down his car window to pose for a picture with a Spurs fan. In a video uploaded to social media, the man – who is off camera – asks Son if he can get him a copy of the new Planet of the Apes film. “DVDs. You do DVDs. Good copies,” the man adds, before identifying himself as a West Ham supporter.

  5. If you get caught doing 33 mph in a 30 mph area in Thames Valley and you go on a speed awareness course to avoid getting 3 points on your licence. So that’s about the same thing in the eyes of West Ham; racism is ok, don’t do it again you naughty boy.

The honour of the club has been tarnished twice; once by the fan and again by the WHU itself. Pity the Board doesn’t have the integrity of the fan who reported the incident.

Every club needs to take this seriously. Meanwhile WHU are blowing bubbles………..

    • I think you missed the whole conclusion to the story. The CPS and courts imposed the fine and no football wide banning order.

West Ham imposed a life ban at the London Stadium and offered an education/awareness course to the fan.

  6. Excuse my ignorance but what is it about DVD that would cause offence? Is it the fat Chinese kid from Fonejacker? If that is the case then the world has gone mad. People will get banned for calling the referee a w@nker next.

    • As Son is from South Korea the suggestion from by the supporter was that all people Asia Pacific sell DVDs. In the East End pubs, it used to be commonplace that football fans were sold DVD’s by individuals who were often Chinese in origin. It is seen as a racial slur to suggest all people from Asia Pacific origin sell DVDs.

      • Nowhere did this person state that ‘all’ people from Asian Pacific sell DVDs. That might have been his mindset, but you CANNOT prove that beyond the reasonable doubt necessary for a guilty verdict.

How about the Tottenham supporters who call West Ham fans pikies? Any charges for that? Nope.

Once again our society demonstrates that you can NEVER say or imply ANYTHING that might be stereotypical against someone….Unless you’re doing it to a white person, then it’s fine.

  7. The guy makes a joke and gets a life time ban pathetic. .Jamie Carrager spits at an opposing supporter which is a vile act anywhere but gets his job back..Disgusting

  8. Madness. I was assaulted outside a pub in Cardiff at our away match. CCTV and 2 witnesses, but South Wales Police decided not to proceed. I guess because we are football supporters we are guilty of everything.
