One of the more surprising stories to emerge in the last few days involves a glowing recommendation of West Ham from a most unexpected source.

£25M summer signing Crysencio Summerville sought sage counsel before deciding whether to join the Hammers during the recently concluded transfer window. The Leeds winger was looking for reassurance before committing to Julen Lopetegui’s project, so he decided to speak with Kalvin Phillips! Yes, you did read that correctly.

Unbelievably, Phillips had nothing but good things to say about the club, which is astonishing given that his loan spell from Manchester City was the stuff of nightmares. The £50M former England midfielder arrived at the London Stadium out of shape and out of form, subsequently got red-carded, made several defensive errors, and even responded with some industrial sign language to a critical Hammers fan.

One could be forgiven for expecting a one-star review of his time in East London. However, Phillips could not have been more complimentary.

Apparently, Phillips praised the behind-the-scenes staff, the player care team, and remarked on how likable the squad is. He then reassured Summerville that he would have no issues settling into life at West Ham, sealing the deal.

Cheers, Kalvin!

Whilst it was an undeniable truth that Phillips was a complete disaster at West Ham. I do think he was totally entitled to give the one fingered salute. Because many supporters of clubs up and down the country are just cowards who think they can say what they want to players, because they buy a ticket and don’t expect anything back.
I’m a firm believer in the Cantona approach to gobby fans!

Talking about Phillips, I was quite impressed with his performane for Ipswich at the weekend. If he’d only been able to play like that for us last season …

Not unbelievable as Philips was treated well by the club and staff. Just not by certain fans maybe.
