It is very early days to pass judgement on all our summer signings- ten in all – because the Premier League season is just four games old. In addition, several of those new recruits have had very limited game time, either through injury in Niclas Fullkrugs’ case or extended acclimatisation to Premier League pace – It seems Jean Clair Todibo and Luis Guilherme in particular are being held back.
In one specific case – already a mainstay in the squad- our ‘brains trust’ need to be congratulated. The new recruit who has hit the ground running to universal acclaim and one Man of The Match award already is Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Already called upon to show his versatility by covering at left back for the injured Emerson, Wan-Bissaka has shown what a magnificent addition he is to the West Ham United defence, and a signing well worth the wait. This is an issue on which both Gonzo and I agree, the £15 million we paid for ‘AWB’ seems a steal, looking at his performances in early games, and I am still amazed that there was no competition for his signature.
It is a little known fact, though, that during his development, the London-raised 26 year old didn’t start life as a right back, switching only as a 19 year old to becoming a defender!
Talking to whufc.com before the Fulham match, the former Crystal Palace and Manchester United £50 million man revealed that:” I was actually a striker until I was 18 or 19, and that’s when I made the transition into becoming a full-back.” – Incredible really- to know we have such a versatile gifted footballer in the club who at 26 is just now approaching his peak.
He also revealed something of his ambition – for one who has already won the FA Cup and League Cup, Wan-Bissaka is still hungry for success in claret and blue: “Any cup is there to win, and we have to get there as a team. I’m always thinking positively going forward, and we can make it happen. We’ve got high expectations for the season.”
Your expectations are probably not as high as the fans, Aaron – but good luck, we are looking forward to sharing in your success. Carrying on in this form will, I’m pretty certain, see Lee Carsley’s England radar pick you up again!
Great way to get your article read, put up a misleading headline.
guys i love this site and have followed for many years now and i do miss hugh”s comments, great bloke.
i do however, have a complaint. the enjoyment of this site is being diminished by the adverts. i understand the need for adverts but they regularly slow down scrolling or cover content. It may just be me being a grumpy old git ( 55 years of following our shower does that to you) am i alone or does it need addressing? as i finished this another chuffing pop up i had to close!!!
I guess these adverts fu d the running of the site.
However, I use a VPN and anti-virus software that seems to stop these annoying buggers from popping up.
I do pay a small subscription for mine, but their are free ones out there you can use that should make them disappear.
Well, can we say that we now have cover for RB, LB and CF in one player 🤣
We all knew Tim did good this summer, but this exceeds all expectations!
