It isn’t just players who cost gazillions in this Premier League of 2024. And of course, just like players, spending huge amounts on a manager / head coach doesn’t guarantee success as my ‘mixed reaction’ article of Saturday suggested. (You can read it here). indeed, from comments made by our high ranking source at the club, West Ham don’t pay compensation for managers – so whichever option the irons go with, it will be an unemployed one.
Teamtalk.com have just published a very interesting list of the ‘top ten most expensive football managers of all time’: Not just Premier League, anywhere..I decided out of curiosity to take a look and – I’m sure you’ll share my surprise to see who was in second spot- the second most expensive manager of all time (and only pipped to top spot by a couple of hundred k) was none other than Graham Potter.
Incredibly, the now out of work former Brighton and Chelsea coach is almost THE most expensive of all time! as the report states:”
Potter earned widespread plaudits for his work with Brighton & Hove Albion, and he implemented an attractive style of football at the Amex Stadium.
The 49-year-old also impressed Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali and they hired him as Thomas Tuchel’s successor in September 2022.
While original reports suggested that Chelsea had triggered a £15million release clause in his Brighton contract, it’s since been revealed that the exact figure was £21.5million. ” And the irony – fired after 31 games.
Available now on the managerial equivalent of a Bosman, Potter was paid if memory serves me right about £200,000 a week by Chelsea after he was fired , which lasted 18 months. And has just finished.
However -the wisdom of appointing who the independent (inews.co.uk )just today described as “yesterdays’ man” is another matter.
Thomas Frank would be good for the Hammers, I like his style of football, would cost a bit to get him but I think he would be worth it. Unfortunately Sullivan hasn’t got a football brain so probably won’t happen.
I go for Carsley or Hoeness (just following the crowd on this one). I cannot judge Potter without some expert insights into what went wrong. As mentioned De Zerbi made Brighton a much better team.
Either way with C or H, we might have a relegation fight but we have done that before and stuck with the team through thick & thin. 3/4 of the problem at WHU is wanting success all of a sudden, getting “to the next level” all of a sudden. This stops us getting the right manager, integrating U21s, picking the best from the championship & lower leagues all mixed in with Steidten’s picks. That is when we will have a team we believe in and who’ll go far as they can. I hate the way we are changing into a club that discards youth & lower leagues, losing that grit & fun of playing, all for what?
Couldn’t agree more. We don’t expect instant success. We do want a project we can get behind
Hoeness would be an excellent appointment.
Let’s just hope West Ham are the Premiership club who are currently in contact with Stuttgart and not Palace or Everton!
Potter already met with Sullivan in the summer and they turned him down
Another click bait headline, Sully has already ruled out Potter as he doesn’t rate him (as per your ‘top’ source inside the club)
A none west ham story from a fan site that’s fallen over the cliff of irrelevance
For sure GOpetegui but NO NO NO Potter . It took Potter 2 years to start getting results at Brighton and of course 31 games of nothing with Chelsea and so we can predict one or two seasons before he might come good at Westham . The LOSEpetegui mistake means that Westham will be forced into bringing in a coach who can turn things around quickly to avoid the risk of relegation .
Hoeness turned around Stuttgart when they looked doomed and about to get relegated. He obviously can change negative mindsets quickly as they finished 2nd behind Bayern the season that followed.
Hoeness was also on Tim’s list to replace Moyes along with Amorin. It seems to me that Tim and Hoeness would work well together. Having our Technical Director and coach aligned is the only way for us to change. It didn’t work with Moyes and isn’t working with JLo
The problem with this approach is that we put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage. We’re not prepared to pay for something that other clubs around us are.
Fair enough to mention Potter as an example where it hasn’t worked out, but was Unai Emery bad business at the €6m Villa paid to get him out of Villarreal?
To say that we’ll never pay compensation just seems quite a limiting approach to take. Also that we seemingly don’t like managers that are younger than mid 50’s as the owner requires them to be ‘experienced.’ It leaves us with quite a narrow field of generally uninspiring options to chose from.
The board are way too risk averse for their own good when it comes to managerial appointments. Hence why we currently have Lopetegui rather than Amorim or Hurzeler. How’s that going for us?
Ambitious clubs appoint dynamic younger coaches. The game has evolved coaching wise as we all witness with innovative tactics from the likes of Pep, Arteta and Emery.
Brighton’s current and former coach show what can be achieved when the recruitment and coach are aligned outside of the big 6 teams.
We are not afraid to spend good money on players & wages. It makes sense to have the best man available leading the team.
I think that we do need to appoint somebody, it has to be faced that the appointment of Lopetegui has been a disaster both from poor results and situation having soured angles.
I don’t see it turning around as it is more than just poor results, I see it as something that is more likely to worsen than improve.
Potter, we could do worse, just bring whoever it is in sooner rather than later we really do not need to be involved in a struggle come the new year.
Brighton fans did a recent poll of fave managers under their owners time at the club and Potter came 3rd.
They were not sad to see him go and played much better under De Zerbi.
Still think Hoeness even at £5m if it’s true that’s his release clause is the best man for the job. Apparently a Premiership club have already made contact with his representatives with Stuttgart lining up replacement.
Just hope it’s us after Amorin slipped through the net.
We’re missing a trick by not getting Frank Lampard to sort us out. If Hoeness is half as good and experienced as Frank, he must be a good choice too. But, why settle for second best when the authentic West Ham born and bred messiah is waiting for the call?
You do love a conspiracy theory. In your 🌍 the earth is flat and Trump will save it. 🤣
I think I hear the valleys calling, Taffy. Time to return?
