The dead wood on West Ham’s eye watering £176m payroll

There was no mention of payoffs for Julen Lopetegui or Graham Potter in the West Ham accounts published on Friday, indicating both remained on the payroll rather than paid off. Another example of the staggering cost of firing failed managers.

As Claret and Hugh stated early last month, West Ham is believed to still be paying Julen Lopetegui on the payroll until the end of his two-year contract in June 2026.

He was reported to be earning £3.5m per year and around £7m over the life of his contract.

Lopetegui was appointed head coach of the  Qatar national team last May for around £2m per year, meaning West Ham would be obliged to pay him the difference of around £1.5m or £125,000 per month.  Clubs often agree to pay former managers monthly on the payroll for the remainder of their contract instead of paying them off in a lump sum.

ONLY it seems West Ham could have three managers still on the payroll.

Graham Potter was thought to be on £5m per year at West Ham. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in January last year, which won’t expire until June 2027.

He is also believed to remain on the monthly payroll despite taking a job as Sweden’s national head coach on a small salary of around £500,000 per year.

The last national coach, Janne Andersson, earned 4,420,300 SEK in 2022, which is equilent £327,000 per year or £6,288 per week.

Again, West Ham is legally obliged to make up the difference until the end of his contract in 2027.

It means that West Ham is likely to have three managers currently on the payroll, costing the club around £10.5m per season or £875,000 each month.

£10mil.? small change compared to Man Utd’s ‘dead manager’ payroll; £11mil. to sign and £16mil. salary to Amorim and £10 mil for Ten Hag.

    Sullivan appointed Loppy.
    Brady appointed Potter.

Without being pernickity, emperical evidence seems to prove that we only have one, “Manager” on the payroll!

    Thanks Sean
    – very informative – I only have one minor disagreement – you refer to Potter’s “small salary” of 500,000 per year – I’m sure many fans would love to get that small salary

Anyway the pertinent point you have made is that WHUFC is now broke having made a succession of poor appointments

This is exactly whey Sullivan should take ALL the blame. No one wanted these pathetic defensive cheap dinosaurs!!!! If we had got attacking coach to use our attacking players we’d be in Europe. But sully knows NOTHING about football.

Sacking Moyes is becoming as stupid as voting for Brexit

Not forgetting JWP, Alvarez, Fulkrug & Cornet as and when they are not being loaned out! At least their wage will have if we get relegated, meaning it should be easier to sell them as their negotiating position will have weakened.

“ONLY it seems West Ham could have three managers still on the payroll”. That is, apart from Nottingham Forest who have FOUR on their books.

  • Dean says:

Perhaps it might be worth mr Sullivan jettisoning his policy of only hiring out of work managers which has proved to be an horrendous false economy and has seen the team fall apart like a cheap suit Sean. We have to change the way the club is run, whether the owners stay or leave, it’s essential the club employs a proper DoF who has control over playing matters, no more input from the directors as it just causes chaos and a lack of cohesion. Cheers

Spot on. Sullivan proves over and over he’s incapable of running anything but….well we know what.
