Well, a gruelling and hardly riveting 90 odd minutes won by a dodgy goal.
Thankfully there was no VAR, especially as Mr Bankes has not been kind to us in the past – and our reward for all our endeavours is a trip to Anfield , which as all Hammers supporters must know, is simply the football Gods laughing at us after seeming to get away with Bowen’s dubious goal.
Mind you, a win at Anfield would give Lopetegui a good bit of credit in the bank if things start going sideways down the road.
Nevertheless, I still struggle to see the point behind this competition in its modified form.
It is weighted in favour of teams who are already in Europe, who uncoincidentally have the deeper squads, but the ‘prize’ of victory is qualification for the continental competition that they are all trying to avoid.
Last nights game has to be seen for what it was, an opportunity to review the squad; having said that, I hope we improve things for the City game on Saturday or it could be a disaster.
I’d hardly call Mark Bullinham and Mark Burrows gods. It’s entirely their doing that the Carabao Cup is now so blatantly fixed to favour the big 6 cabal.
We benefited the past three seasons by being in Europe and entering the League Cup in round 3. No one complained then.
It’s not about that, it’s the factvyhat the teams in Europe are now seeded so they can’t be drawn to play against each other and predominantly as the home side.
