The huge cost of the Hammers starting X1 bench

Seven players which cost West Ham £116m were left on the bench yesterday evening with the starting eleven costing £115m to assemeble

Fabianski £7m Fredericks Free  Diop £22.5m Ogbonna £10m  Cresswell £4.5m Masuaku £6m Bowen £22.5m Soucek £15m Rice Free Fornals £25m Antonio  £7m  cost a total of £115m to acquire

The seven substitutes left on the bench at kick-off were  Balbuena £4m Yarmolenko £17.5m Felipe Anderson £34m Lanzini £11m Haller £45m Johnson Free and Randolph £4,5m and cost £116m to acquire.

That said, the starting X1 and formation seemed to work for David Moyes yesterday and it hard to argue that he didn’t start the best team available to him.

Nearly £100m of the talent in the form of  Sebastian Haller, Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson came on in the dying minutes of the game which ended in a 2-1 defeat but they were little effect although to be fair they had little time to be able to change things around.

  1. Pellegrini mess left on bench. Problem with switching managers every other year, no strategy.
I wonder how many of those on the bench have their agents out trying to get them moves, hence no tackling and avoiding injuries.
Unfortunately Yarmolenko switched off for the goal and didn’t track back.
That’s the problem with all those on the bench, they can’t be trusted to do the hard yards

  2. What you say is true Hugh, but to put some perspective Arsenal had Pepe on the bench and he alone cost about 65 million while I think David Luiz cost about 30 million and he was also on the bench. Unfortunately when a new manager comes in whether it is Moyes or Arteta they may have different ideas about whether to play certain players and that should not take into consideration how much they cost (think Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil)

That is why I now feel we need some stability and not rush for a new manager

  3. If ever a match was there for the taking it was last nights. We had Arsenal on the ropes but yet again the substitutions came way too late and that is something we all know Moyes has a problem with.

  4. it’s a reflection of who we are and where we came from that we still have a small club mentality that people make a big deal out of the fact we have a 96 million front three sat on the bench wheras the bigger clubs might have that amount in one player. Yarmolenko at 17.5 is small change these days. Even Anderson at 34 million would not be a massive amount to the bigger teams. Even Haller at 45 is nowhere near the cost of an aubamayang or a Kane or an Aguero. They are probably all 100 million pound players on their own. As someone said above Arsenal had a 70 million pound signing in Pepe sat on the bench yesterday.

  5. What they cost and what they’re worth are 2 totally different things!

  6. There is a saying “Bad management, Bad Work force”. The bench is symtomatic of the dysfunctional owners of the club and their decisions they have made in the management of this club.
Man Utd although a bigger club, has those same issues which also stem from the top down with an even Bigger number of costly players on their bench. Its not as simple as totting up the cost of a substitutes bench.
