The Moyes verdict

David Moyes got everything right yesterday.

Shedding a perceived nervousness to venture away from a defensive mindset he went for it in a big way and was paid off in spades by a team on fire.

What was even more pleasing to see were the genuine smiles, hugs and sincere congratulations during the goal celebrations – we finally looked like a team that was finding its way forward.

The Haller/Antonio combination worked a treat – as it had done at St Mary’s and was a major part in us landing our first double of the season.

The Saints defence really had no answer to the pair of them and that Haller should have the confidence to supply a rabona for Fornals to provide the assist for Michail’s goal was something to behold.

But the bottom line was the manager’s approach to the game  and with the defence performing so well let’s hope for more of the same against Arsena; and Wolves.

Commenting at https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/february/29-february/david-moyes-there-were-lot-good-things-performance the manager said: I said before the game that good performances lead to results – we had a good performance at Liverpool on Monday night and I always felt that the players have been improving.

We took it on today, it was a different kind of game to the one against Liverpool and we created a host of chances. In fact, we could have been further out of sight a bit earlier.

We were fairly clinical – we got through with three or four counter attacks and didn’t make the final pass to get the opportunity to score. but in the end we got the goals. Seb’s goal was a really good one – he jumped with the goalkeeper and won it back.

He had a great chance with a header prior to that, Michail had the chance to play Jarrod Bowen in for a goal and it didn’t quite come off, and then he breaks away himself and gets the third goal to put the game to bed.

There were a lot of good things and a lot of good performances.

Michail is powerful and the longer the game went on Seb Haller grew into it as well. They became a real handful, the two of them, so great credit to them both.”

  1. It was about time, we have been calling for this for the last number of games. I am not a fan of Moyes and to have only 1 win from his first 8 league games proved that. I don’t mind a team losing as long as they perform and not be negative. He has been too negative for me but he went away from that yesterday. I am delighted with both the win and performance in such a big game but the question for me, will he return to his negative approach in the next games. I sincerely hope not. He got the correct formation, we were all calling for 2 up. He dropped Snodgrass which was long overdue. Moving to a midfield 4 helped Noble but a big decision is looming for me as when Soucek is back he must go in beside Rice with Noble playing his part off the bench. I believe Fornals too can play in beside Rice. His decision to bring Snodgrass on ahead of Anderson was a surprising decision. Anderson is class and perhaps this kick up the ass will inspire him. I think we can all see now how Diop has improved with a proper RB in beside him. I wish Fredericks a full recovery but he needs to be moved on during the summer. For me it was a 9 out of 10 for Moyes yesterday but I still have my reservations.

    What rabona??

Haller ‘HEADED’ the ball on to Fornals who put in a perfect pass to Antonio for the goal.
