The summer window -which clubs are dragging their feet?

The summer transfer window -and what clubs have or haven’t spent – is always a time of the year when debates rage to and fro on the forums.

Most of the discussions remain the same from year to year with accusation and counter accusations being directed at the inactivity or otherwise of  West Ham and other clubs

This year – despite Covid 19 – there are those who believe that we are lagging behind the rest of the league since the window opened and argue that plenty of deals are being done whilst the Irons drag their feet.

So – thanks to Teamtalk at https://talksport.com/football/731702/premier-league-done-deals-2020-summer-transfer-window-manchester-united-arsenal-chelsea-liverpool-willian-werner-ramsdale-hojbjerg/  – we checked out exactly how the market has been going since the last day of the season when the window opened.

And the reality is that the top four or five clubs – with Manchester United a notable absentee – have dominated the business which has been done with six biggish signings involving Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

The four  have spent  £141 million of the £183 million (appx) spent so far with Sheffield United splashing out £18 million on Aaron Ramsdale. This means that between them, the remaining 15 clubs clubs have spent 24 million between them.

There are loads of undisclosed fees mentioned which are normally small anyway and in total 36 signings have been made – most of them basically insignificant signings along with three frees.

NB: News has just emerged that Ben Chilwell has joined Chelsea although no fee has yet been mentioned.

  1. I do think Moyes is the right man for the job, however he’s not particularly decisive in transfers windows. Admittedly both Bowen and Soucek were excellent signings though.

  2. Look at the money we spent last 2 years, where did that get us? Bring a few youngsters in to give a few seniors a kick in the backside. Coyi!

  3. I think the issue isn’t HOW MUCH we’re spending, i think the issue is we don’t seem to be strengthening at all and all the teams that will be around us are. Yes its early in the transfer window but all the cheaper and better players will be gone by the time we pull out a finger and get the strength in the areas desperately needed.

  4. They will sell Rice to Chelski on 4 October for £80m which includes somebody totally useless in part exchange for an undisclosed fee and then pocket the remaining £79m!

  5. We have signed Soucek. He was on loan until the end of the season!

  6. How many teams, outside of Chelsea, have actually strengthened? I don’t think Spurs signing Joe Hart (!!), or Wolves signing a cheap player from Rochdale count as strengthening. Maybe we should all take a breath. As long as we get what we need, who cares about all the noise?

  7. The frustration stems from the fact that we are only a couple of players away from a decent Premier league team – enough to not be worried about relegation. We simply cannot go into the season with the fullbacks we have and need back ups for CB and ST, any injuries (and lets face it, Antonio will get injured) and we will be severely weakened. Premier league quality fullbacks are a must- its such a glaringly obvious weak position.

  8. Every team in the prem has to strengthen every year it’s a fact ,,or you just drop away..it Dosnt havecto be loads of signings even just 1or 2 but you have to strengthen full stop..the trouble with us is, we know what weak spots we have for the last couple of seasons but refuse to do something about it ..I.e another striker..how long has that been going on ..when Antonio was injured last year we had haller and thats it …then we leavevit so long that it Dosnt get done and we say ,oh we can get bye ..not only striker but full backs as well..its only couple players but it’s just lack of activity to get it done..thats the problem the fans have because we have needed these players hire a while now ..

  9. Every year the Premiership teams are paid a lot of money. We pay a pepper corn rent, whilst others pay through the nose for maintenance. Yet the board, made up of two Billionaires and a lot of Multi-Millionaires plead poverty. When I was a child, it used to be, oh they are only owned by people in the Building Trade they haven’t got much money. We need to balance the books, that is another favourite, usually given the Season we go down.

Smaller clubs have ambition, smaller clubs use the money they get not to pay Dividends or to build anything fancy in the Clubs Ground. No they simply spend it on the Team, I agree with all those who have said that strengthening each Season in the Premiership is a must. Youngsters are all well and good, but as Norwich found out, they get tired and burnt out very quickly. We need a few more Seasoned Players, they don’t have to be old just experienced and strong enough. We need more Defenders, at least three. Each year we get a lot of injuries. Refs don’t protect Players out of the Big Four. You need quality on the Field and on the Bench. Hands in pockets please Board. Other clubs have spent a lot, but still realise you need to Strengthen your Squad. Kick out the Dead Wood. Both the Board and some Supporters are far to Sentimental about certain Players who are finished. Respect them they say. The hell with that they don’t respect the Supporters when they take their pay and don’t perform to the necessary standard. The past is the past, leave it there and leave the Players of the Past and the Sentiment there. Build us a good fit side without the Ancients in it. Experience, not Senility.

  10. We can afford to lose a couple players from, anderson wilshere yarmolenko masuaku or lanzini, and it won’t make us any weaker than last season. But if we dont get in 3 new players in the obvious positions pointed out, we are chancing another relegation battle all over again. It’s really that simple.
