The ‘worst of both worlds’ | West Ham transfer that doesn’t make sense

Like so many of us, I’ve spent the last 24 hours utterly mystified as to why West Ham would want to sign Callum Wilson.

So focused have I been on what feels like a massive backwards step for our club, I hadn’t even stopped to consider the other side of the equation—why would Wilson want to join West Ham?

We’re told that he turned down a pay-as-you-play contract at Newcastle because he wanted regular first-team football. Fair enough. But we’re also supposed to believe he’s joining West Ham on similar terms? So it’s not about the money.

Which means it must be a footballing decision, right?

Well, that theory falls apart when you consider Graham Potter doesn’t even want him. Most fans are convinced this is another David Sullivan special—just like Danny Ings. And if Potter didn’t ask for him, then chances are he won’t play him either. So if Wilson’s not here for the money or the minutes… what is he here for?

If Potter has genuinely told the board he doesn’t want to sign a striker this summer, then it suggests he’s backing Füllkrug and Bowen to share the role. Maybe Antonio stays, maybe young Marshall gets a few chances—but Wilson? He’s likely to end up in the same boat as Ings: stuck on the bench, collecting dust.

It’s clearly a bad deal for West Ham—but it’s also a terrible move for Wilson. He’d be better off going to Saudi for the payday, or dropping to the Championship for actual football. At West Ham, he’s likely to get neither.

It’s a transfer that makes no sense for anyone involved.

I think we are all as baffled as you, absolutely makes no sense which ever way you look at it. Sullivan written all over it.

  • David Allix says:

How many goals did Wilson score all last season ? ZERO !!!!
Over the last 5 years he has been injured more than he has played.
I have been a supporter for over 70 years , Sullivan has been the worst owner during this time , I don’t think he likes West Ham .
How sad , at least I have had the best of the Hammers going all around UK and Europe , never to be seen or enjoyed again for present supporters.
    RIP / WHU .

Exactly a financially bad decision for the club , Sullivan had no clue about transfers . This is not backing Potter no sell on value and paying wages for someone who will be injured more than he plays . Plus his age what is Sullivan thinking madness hope this don’t happen , not good enough for the club or fans

  • Albanyhammer says:

The only way he could be useful to us is if, after signing him on a free, we then use him as a part ex on one of the Southampton or Leicester players we are supposed to be after. You know it makes sense! Or is that a bit too Del Boy!?

  • Lance Marsh says:

If any club in the EPL needed a director of football it is West Ham United. Sullivan has no football qualification whatsoever, and his judgment over a number of years has been demonstrably uninformed.
He shouldn’t even be anywhere near the transfer conversations until those who do have football knowledge and understanding have identified the players with the attributes required to take the club forward.
Tim Steidten has copped a great deal of criticism and responsibility for the significant summer spending in 2024 which did not achieve a return to competing for European places, but in my fifty plus years of following the club he is the best we have had.
Steidten brought in Fullkrug, but only after months of procrastination and failure to negotiate a price for Steidten’s choice in Jhon Duran. Fullkrug was a panic buy when there was little else available, but not a panic of Steidten’s making.
    I doubt Ward-Prouse was a Steidten suggestion.
I suspect Rodriguez was a Lopetegui pick.
I have similar doubts about Irving, and does anyone seriously believe Steidten was responsible for Danny Ings’ recruitment?
Sullivan has scapegoated Steidten and many supporters appear to have swallowed the narrative.
In the professional football world, recruiting players and coaches for the lowest fees is never cost effective. You’d think Sullivan might have learned this by now.
And running without a director of football is a foolhardy arrogance.

“stuck on the bench, collecting dust.” And collecting heaps of money for nothing.

  • James says:

I’m sorry but if we sign Callum Wilson we deserve to get relegated. Nothing about this signing makes sense. We finally offload an ageing, injury prone striker coming towards the end of his career (Ings), only to replace him with an ageing, injury prone striker coming towards the end of his career. Pathetic and desperate are the words that spring to mind. This stinks of Sullivan.

  • Rob says:

Only Sulivan has the answer to that, which will make no sense to anyone else. It’s a stupid signing if it happens.

  • Alhama Hammer says:

The only positive I can see is perhaps as a mentor,or coaching for Marshall and the lad we got from Celtic ( forgot his name). As a regular first team player, no chance

  • Timbo says:

Unbelievable if it happens. Even if it’s pay as you play, will Potter be under pressure to have him on the bench rather than Marshall? At least be honest and admit that the real reason for this is that due to previous mismanagement by the Board, we are unable to afford anyone else.

  • Ray Martin says:

Sullivan just cannot help himself. Nothing will change until he’s gone. The thing is nobody wants our club. The Golds can’t sell their shares and that’s no surprise. Most people would want outright ownership or nothing. We have awful training facilities and we don’t own our ground. Add to that how terrible we were last year and West Ham look like a bad investment. Would anybody be completely shocked if Potter was sacked or left and Sullivan appointed himself first team manager?

  • Steveo says:

Sorry I can’t agree with you on this one. So what if his agent is a friend of Sullivans family. I don’t think Potter would have him if he didn’t think he was worth a punt. Sullivan would have discussed it with him first. I think he could do well for us. He was on the bench for Newcastle for the last 11 games of the season so he may well be over the injury that kept him out. One point that fans never realise is the majority of strikers do get injured. Very few get through a season without injuries

  • Euan Morrison says:

So whilst I was dismayed at first. The idea of a pay as you play contract for him changes things for me.
We need to spend the limited funds we have on midfield. But we also need reinforcements in attack.
We’re not going to get the level of forward we really want for the money we have available this summer.
He’s a great striker. Always scores against us, but we’re worried about his fitness, so why not give him a contract where we’re not committing big finds to him off he’s not playing? If he’s fit and playing, he’ll score goals – he always has.

  • Jeeps says:

Any player over 30 has got to be a windup.
Next thing will be Sully putting on some boots.

  • Sue says:

    It’s a joke
If I was Wilson I would think again
Potter does not want you and me and I am sure many hammers fans will be gutted.
    What happened about youth.
Paying out stupid money for someone to keep the bench warm.
I would rather us buy 5 million players and take the chance on them.
Or give our youth players a run.
    I am gutted
    Hope it does not happen

    How sad, more HASBEENS.

  • Paul Basnett says:

Indeed it literally makes no sense what so ever and shows how bad an influence Sullivan is in transfer windows.
I though Kretinsky specifically wanted a DOF because he realised the problem with Sullivan but even when we had one he was still making a mess of things.
Callum Wilsons main talent when fit seemed to be scoring against us so he can even do that now.

    • Carrick hammer says:

I just can’t help thinking an awful lot of similar comments were made when we signed craig Dawson. Look how that turned out.

    • Claret&blueblood says:

Please be smoke and mirrors but seems to be too widely reported to be a hoax.
This absolutely throws Potter under the bus after he specifically said he wanted young, energetic players who are going to improve and increase in value at West Ham.
Did we learn nothing by signing Ings!! This would make Potter and his team that he worked hard to assemble look stupid!

    • Mammal says:

Watch this space….. own goal incoming!
