The names that could rescue the season | West Ham’s last-minute defender gamble

Saving the best until last or else panic buying to fill the most important squad vacancy: West Ham United supporters all have their own opinions as the last five days of the transfer window are upon us without a defender appearing across the threshold at Rush Green.

The most porous defence in the Premier League is worse off than when the window opened.

A situation most fans still  find impossible to believe and one which surely leaves Premier League relegation competitors rubbing their hands with glee.

West Ham United, the only side in the Premier League relegation battle with a weaker defence than as of 1st January.

one of the reported front runners to join on loan – Axel Disasi

So with five days to go, the Irons now have to sort through the ‘odds and ends’ available – players with perhaps with six months or less on their contracts who they could tempt to East London: A five minute conversation with our independent ‘transfer commentator’ quickly threw up the following alternatives to Chelsea’s Axel Disase or ‘Villa’s Tyrone Mings –  (main pic) both of whom have been linked in recent days:

‘James Lascelles at Newcastle, Ethan Pinnock at Brentford, Marcos Senesi at Bournemouth, John Stones from Manchester City and Brighton’s Adam Webster all fit the profile with contracts expiring soon. ‘

Having committed themselves to returning Brighton’s Igor Julio, the Hammers simply have to bring in a Premier League-quality centre back – almost certainly on a short loan.

Don’t expect the club to break the bank: No decent player in their right mind would commit to join now unless his contract was running down and there were few other options available to him or his agent.

West Ham, remember, is pretty much the ‘last resort’ right now.

Another ten or twelve centre backs with Premier League or Championship experience are in the last year and half of their contract and might fancy a big money move to east London with a guaranteed contract – if the Irons escape.

The litmus test will of course be, when considering any of them: Are they as good – or better -than West Ham’s third centre back currently?

“Probably”. Whoever they are. Five days and counting.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Cheapest and best option would be to find a coach or coaches to work quickly on Max Kilman and give him the understanding of his role. Kilman has all the necessary skills to perform like a £40 million action man and rock of defence. He just needs direction and appropriate instructions to become a mainstay of our team.

Nuno, get your arm around the guy’s shoulder and show him the way. No tippy tappy. No back passing. No waiting and watching. No nonsense. Be a leader amongst leaders. Pull the strings and make sure others do the right things.

    So many suggestions already made.
What’s the point going over same ground?
If there were any intentions they would have already been signed
Sullivan/Nuno won’t be signing anybody end of story (and whu).

Players will want to run their contracts down then go on a free transfer in the summer.

Those names are a good reality check of realistic prospects given the situation.

If I were Mings, I would stick at Villa and same for Disase at Chelsea.

We have to decide if there is a Craig Dawson amongst the others but none of them have been playing with any regularity so hard to say they walk straight into the first team and are sharp enough to not make the mistakes that the current lot are making…
