James Tomkins may be set to save the Irons a lot of money in next summer’s transfer market.
It’s well known that we are in the market for a right back and following JT’s impressive displays in the position his claims to become a regular in the position going forward are looking more and more of a goer.
He admitted himself over the weekend that he’s still learning the job but it hasn’t escaped anybody’s attention that with him and Angelo Ogbonna at the back we kept our first clean sheet the weekend at the eleventh time of trying.
There were the odd moments of concern at the back but with Tomkins and Reid outstanding, Ogbonna coming back to his best and Cresswell excellent, we look to have found our four at the back.
Indeed some sources are already discussing the possibility of JT being our long term answer at right back with the club now perhaps looking set to sign a back-up in the position.
ClaretandHugh was told: “He had a worrying time there a few years ago but he is that much older and looking a far better player in the role. Yes, it’s conceivable he could save us a lot of money in the summer.”
Hope he is better than Jenkinson otherwise he is not worth looking at,Tomks can make a career at RB because we have so much talent coming through at C B Oxford,Burke,Henry and others he will not command a place there,
I said at the begging of the season this position is as important as any other and we were week but I was wrong as long as Tomks does not get injured we have it covered,
There must be some good RB out there in the world that have not been snapped up come on coaches find us a bargain to cover Tomks,
Does anybody know if the club have considered soon-to-be out of contract Sam Byram from Leeds. I think he is at least as good as Jenkinson and might be got for a bargain price in the January window. Not many know but he also has east London roots having originally been born/lived in Thurrock. Just a thought.
Tomkins is The new Jonathan Spector, allround utility player. He can play midfield or anywhere along the back four. Mr versatile.
The new Steve Potts! I remember him filling in at RB back in the 90s when Bilic, Reiper and Rio occupied the centre defence and he couldn’t get back in at CB. And with Breacker injured slotted in at RB quite well.
At last sanity is pevailing. We’ve had our best results with him playing RB. I thought Jenks did well last year and I don’t doubt his commitment, but Tomkins has outplayed him in this position this year. He doesn’t have the same pace but defensively he’s more solid.
Get the flags out !!!
Must have signed a contract at specsavers ?lol.
Tommo has played well in that position a few times now and if you compare his performances against jenkinsons he’s is the outstanding choice !!!!
And I don’t think we have lost and only conceded 1 goal !?????
He’s there on merit anyway you look at it !! Jenks isn’t the player he was last year for whatever reason !!!! Maybe the new gunners contract ???? Who knows ! Who cares he’s a gooner !!!!
I also believe the boy Cullen could play there at a push as well which in turn would help him in his preferred MF position !!!! Plus oxford as well !!!
Tommo deserves a crack !!!!!!!
