This was very poor – it’s time to start worrying

Match verdict by Hughie Southon

The bottom three by the time the first international break came around wasn’t on anybody’s script!

But that’s the reality and whatever anyone may or may not have to say about the manager building something new,  four points from seven games and the worst football we have seen since Moyes returned is startling.

Everywhere you looked today there were mistakes against an opposition team who really were nothing special. Now is the time to start worrying.

We have reached a stage similar to that before last season and the return following Covid when you just know that if we go behind we won’t get back into the game,

Yes, there was some hard luck notably when Benrahma hit the inside of an upright and a Soucek glancing header went wide. But that’s not enough from a team or squad which went into the season with such aspirations.

Moyes reckons we were getting close to the style of football he is trying to introduce,. It would be a big help if he told us what that style is supposed to be because right now all I see is a serious below average team on its way to nowhere in the Premier League.

This was poor …very poor indeed.

  1. Agreed, Moyes does not inspire, not sure where we go from here, but his days must be numbered, a side devoid of everything

  2. Completely agree.
Our new style of play look uncannily like our old style of play. But then what can we expect when he buys all these new players and then sits them next to each of on the bench every weekend.

  3. To use the vernacular
    Couldn’t beat an egg
Couldn’t score in a house of disrepute
    Conclusion PATHETIC

  4. We were second best today, to a team that have struggled to find a result. Our passing was intercepted, we lost possession in tackles, apart from the Benrahma effort there was nothing, lots of corners and we didn’t win one of them. I’m still at a loss how you can spend £170m on 8 or 9 players and then leave them on the bench.”Bedding them in” I hear, whats that and how long does that take? Moyes is in trouble and he knows it.Confidence is draining from this team at an alarming rate!

  5. Don’t totally agree with you, Hugh. True, this wasn’t a very good performance, but I thought that we were no worse than Everton; which doesn’t say a lot. I felt that a draw would have been the correct result. Soucek was anonymous in this match & Fornals, despite being involved, did nothing positive. Paqueta did nothing to convince me that he should be in the team. I think that, although we are starting very slowly, the tide will turn (& ought to, considering the money that has been spent). But, it does not look like we will qualify for Europe again this year. I’m going for a finish round about 10th to 14th. Stay positive ! We won’t be relegated – famous last words !

    • ….but with 31 games to go, West Ham are only three points off 14th place and four from 10th. Surely you can be more positive than that?

  6. Poor today indeed, but just remember West Ham have come from behind against Sikborg, and FCSB and but for VAR Chelsea.

  7. Very worrying when you have a player like Downs who was mom last game and doesn’t even feature, **** poor passing Always losing second phase contension very worrying indeed

    • Be real…..Downes, at 23 has had experience in the Championship and in League One. He’s not a creative player and doesn’t score many goals. He did receive an awful lot of yellow cards at that level from his rash tackling. He had a tidy game in his only start, but was never MOTM. So who do you want him to play instead of? The 27 year old Czech Republic captain who has 50 plus caps and is much more likely to score? Surely not next England skipper, Rice? Fornals – not a chance. Lanzini – you’re having a laugh! Benrahma – I’d like to see Downes weave his way around a few international full backs. Paqueta – FFS. A Brazilian international, who is getting used to a completely different league than Ligue 1. Bowen – Never. He’s not fit to lace Bowen’s misfiring boots! Downes won’t play much for West Ham before they loan him out or send him back to the Championship.

  8. That is the worst I’ve seen from our club in a few seasons. We had nothing to offer, played poor football barely Premier standard. We struggled to achieve mediocre. It’s in midfield we fail most. Today I thought Soucek and Fornals were terrible, bad passing, no positional sense, no transition. Bowen looks flat. We line up with one front man and the opposition two centre backs eat us up. We are not getting down the flanks, we are easy to pick off. We need a rethink. I don’t get Rice and Soucek – it’s not working at all. Today Onana for Everton was more effective than both and got forward more. I’m thinking a back three with w/b’s or one CDM only. With either, we could play three attacking i.e. Cornet, Paqueta and Benrahma, linking with Scamacca, get the w/b’s forward wide. We need more passing with ball retention – back to basics.

  9. Get ready for Moyes out and Tuchel in headlines.Joking aside, its not looking good and the new additions seem to be struggling with West Ham as well as the Premiership.I think that again,we have paid too much for players that are the wrong fit for our club.My worry is what will the state of our squad be like after the world cup and being in a fight to stay up.

  10. Is it to early to say “we’re to good to go down”? Another average performance with too many just not at the level required.
David Moyes has got some big decisions to make and stop trying to convince us and himself that it will all come good. Players that have performed outstandingly, are not doing it anymore. Fornels and Soucek come to mind. There is no room for sentiment.

  11. How many mistakes can Moyes make, before the optimists start to condemn him. The Players don’t fit. Others can achieve making Players fit in. Moyes just likes the old squad. How can a new Striker hope to score, when Players like Fornals insist on passing to someone in a worst position, because they are used to them. Moyes is the one who should have ensured that the Players, play as a team.

  12. Leave your judgements until the end of October, which will only then be one third of the season played. There’s only been seven games so far and from where I’m sitting West Ham have been unlucky. One win at this early stage of the season can send us up four or five places and we’re currently six points off 7th place. West Ham deserved more against Forest and Chelsea – and a point may have been earned at Everton had Benrahma’s great curling effort counted instead of hitting the inside of the post. It really isn’t that bad. Save your negativity and pessimism until after 14th January – which is half way through this season. (Wolves, away) ….COYI
