As confirmed exclusively by Kris last night, West Ham have begun the search for a Director of Football to bring long‑term stability to their recruitment strategy. It marks a significant reversal in approach after unsuccessful spells under Rob Newman, Tim Steidten and Kyle Macaulay, all of whom have since departed, and the board suggesting that a Director of Football was not required.

Claret & Hugh believes that the driving force behind the appointment is the club acknowledging the need for stronger strategic oversight in transfers and squad planning.

Nuno Espírito Santo, who previously clashed with Edu during his time at Nottingham Forest, is understood to support the decision. He will, however, remain closely involved in the recruitment process.

Recent transfer windows have only reinforced the need for a more coherent and modern football structure behind the scenes.

Who’s in The Running For DOF Role?

Several high‑profile names have already been linked with the role. These include Paul Mitchell, renowned for his work at Monaco and more recently Newcastle, and strongly endorsed by Mark Noble; and Lee Dykes, Brentford’s respected recruitment chief. Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s Managing Director of Professional Football and a prominent figure in Portuguese football, has also been mentioned, reflecting West Ham’s ambition to modernise their football operations.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked to Pinto.

Any final decision is expected to be delayed until the end of the season, with the club’s league status likely to play a major role in determining the outcome.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

Go for the Bournemouth one imho they attract better players than Brentford and are more closely aligned to the philosophy the supporters would like to see longer term.

  • Stubbo says:

Can we please have a DoF that is decoupled from the manager, so when the manager leaves you don’t have to bin the whole structure and start again!

  • Jeeps says:

When will they start earning their crust?
If lucky it will be 18 months before any transfers occur.
How much will they have to pay to get this DoF.
Can’t see anybody committing to whu until relegation is decided.
More importantly is getting rid of Sullivan and Brady.

As long as the director of football doesn’t get final say on who the club brings in. This must stay with the manager or we will lose Nuno as we did Moyes
