Tim Steidten, West Ham United’s Technical Director, has been instrumental in the club’s ambitious summer recruitment drive. His data-driven approach to scouting and player identification has yielded impressive results, transforming the Hammers’ squad.

Appointed in 2023, Steidten has quickly made his mark, overseeing the signings of key players like Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo, Cyrencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug. His ability to identify talent and negotiate deals has been crucial in strengthening the team’s competitiveness.

Steidten’s reputation as a shrewd negotiator was evident in the acquisition of Todibo, who initially rejected a move to West Ham in favour of Juventus. However, the German’s persistence paid off, as he convinced the French defender to join the Hammers.

With the transfer window still open, Steidten’s work is far from over. The club’s continued pursuit of high-quality players suggests that the technical director is determined to build a squad capable of challenging for European honors. The reverse side of the same coin now means that the Hammers’ transfer supremo must direct his attention to moving fringe players onto other clubs. In some ways, perhaps an even more taxing task lies ahead!

As West Ham embark on a new era under manager Julen Lopetegui, Tim Steidten’s role in shaping the club’s future will be crucial. His ability to identify and recruit talented players will be key to the Hammers’ success in the coming seasons.

What articles like this get wrong is that they miss that having someone like Steidten in place means having a resource working every day on finding the right players. We probably have been talking to Tobido for months and became the one party that had the money to execute the deal. As for now moving to getting players out Managers want incoming players in the window at the earliest time. Therefore, if you have the budget room you do that first and then, when you see what you have managed to get done, then focus on moving players out. Not only will he have a plan for this window, but likely the next half dozen. That replacements for Fullkrug will already be identified. That the date that Kudos may move on (rather like Logan’s Run) is already pencilled in. That sort of process is an entirely different world to what we used to do. Selling Ings, selling Cornet, plans for Zouma will have been in place for months – if not longer. Agents will have known that the club wanted to move their clients on. Other clubs would have been given hints that they were available. My guess is that one of the reasons Steidten is so successful in bringing people in is that he tells them, and their agents, that if decent offers come in in the future for them, from bigger clubs, West Ham won’t stand in the way.
