Tonka video exclusive: I had offers to leave West Ham

Hammers legend Ray Stewart is commenting exclusively to ClaretandHugh on his life with the club throughout this week.

He has discussed how he came to become a Hammer and the club’s penalty king and today he discusses the managers he worked under at the club and notably the chances he had to leave the club.

John Lyall became a father figure to him but there were also spells under Lou Macari and Billy Bonds. Today he opens up on each of them.

Today Ray discusses the clubs that came for him and the response he got from John Lyall as he thought about things.

Lyall was the man who made Tonka the player he was and one of the most loved in our history and it’s rare to hear of the affection that existed between a player and his manager. Trust was the key!

In forthcoming videos this week Tonka will tell us of his feelings towards David Moyes and Declan Rice along with such as Frank McAvennie.

He sat down with CandH’s Gonzo to give you the bottom line on all things Hammers – check them out every day.
