John Egan is set to undergo a trial at West Ham United, potentially securing a move to the club on a free transfer.
The Republic of Ireland defender is reportedly participating in a private friendly match against Dagenham & Redbridge this week, aiming to showcase his fitness and convince the club to bring him to East London.
If successful, Egan would become the tenth addition to West Ham’s squad this summer under Hammers director of football Tim Steidten.
This development was shared by ExWHUEmployee on The West Ham Way website, where it was noted that the club shifted focus to Egan due to concerns surrounding their initial target, Joel Matip. The former Liverpool central defender has only recently recovered from a cruciate ligament knee injury.
“There were doubts over Joel Matip’s fitness and whether he would be the ideal backup option,” Ex revealed. “That transfer faced several hurdles, although it’s not completely ruled out. Meanwhile, John Egan is expected to begin a trial ahead of a potential move to the club.”
No doubt Fotheringham would have given Egan a good reference
Egan is a great back up centre half but he is also recovering from a long term injury.
Good luck john from a fellow irishman you always did your country proud
Presumably a one year contract on a fraction of the wage we let players leave or go out on loan fee. Probably worth it if only to stop the articles about ‘centre back crisis’ every time one of the current group gets an injury or rack up enough points for a suspension. Enough to carry us through until January at least.
Sorry not a good potential signing in my view. Spent most of his career in the lower leagues and not played any top class football since his Achilles injury a year ago. Would we really risk him against top Premiership strikers when we’ve only just got Zouma out the door due to injury issues?. Would much rather see Kaelan Casey given opportunity instead of Egan.
