Everyone at Claret & Hugh was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of young West Ham goalkeeper Oscar Fairs, who tragically died at the age of 15 following a courageous battle with cancer.

The heartbreak his family must be enduring is unimaginable. As a father of a 15-year-old boy myself, my heart goes out to everyone who knew Oscar, a remarkable young lad by all accounts. Certainly this kind of tragedy is something no parent should ever have to go through and there really are very few words anyone can say in such circumstances. However, I do know from reading messages and tributes since Oscars passing that all of the West Ham family are sending their love to the family of a brave young man who battled with such determination.

Hammers’ sporting director Mark Noble, who clearly knew Oscar well, paid a heartfelt tribute yesterday, expressing his sorrow and deep respect. Noble said:

“Oscar was adored by everyone at the Academy. Not only was he a great goalkeeper, but he was also a true Hammer and a fantastic young person, who will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know him.

“I have wonderful memories of Oscar playing in my garden – Lenny and his teammates all loved him. He was a friendly, happy, well-mannered, and polite young man, who had such a bright future ahead of him. It is unimaginably devastating that he has been taken from his family and friends at such a young age.

“As a mark of respect, all scheduled Academy fixtures this weekend have been postponed, including this evening’s PL2 Under-21 match against Stoke City. In due course, the Club will share information on plans to pay tribute to Oscar and ensure his name is never forgotten at West Ham United.

“The thoughts and sincere condolences of everyone at the Club are with Oscar’s parents, Natalie and Russell, and his brother Harry. We kindly ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time.

Rest in peace, brave Oscar.”

There really isn’t much more to add during such an incredibly sad time. The loss follows what must have been an unimaginably difficult period for Oscar’s family.

Difficult article to write, Gonzo, and also difficult to comment on, but I feel compelled to do so having a 15-year-old myself. I’d like the family to know that they’re in my thoughts. RIP Oscar.
