Southampton are reportedly ready to spend up to £6 million to re-sign former striker Danny Ings from West Ham United.

The 31-year-old forward had an impressive stint at St Mary’s, scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances between 2018 and 2021.

However, Ings left in a controversial move to Aston Villa for £30 million just before the new season started in August 2021. His subsequent transfer to West Ham was something of a desperate measure as the club was battled relegation and were desperate for reinforcements.

Ings never quite won over manager David Moyes, largely because he didn’t fit Moyes’ system, which relies on a lone striker. Last season, Ings managed only three goals in 37 appearances across all competitions for West Ham, starting just seven matches.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton are willing to offer up to £6 million to bring Ings back to the South Coast, where he arguably had the best period of his career.

I do feel some sympathy for Ings, who never got a consistent run of games at West Ham. The transfer ended up wasting 18 months of his career and a significant amount of the club’s money.

As long as we don’t subsidise his wages, I think it’s the best for everyone. Hopefully this will be the last loss we have to swallow.

I doubt we can get any transfer fee for him if we don’t subsidise his wages tbh. Also there’s Benny, and perhaps Aguerd and Cornet outgoing, so no more losses is an unrealistic expectation.

      Well said Phil
