Reality starts to bite for several of West Ham’s fringe players: Any with real World Cup ambitions for next summer are reassessing their futures as motives other than money start to play on their minds.

As Martin reported in C&H recently, additional sources now indicate that Argentine midfielder Guido Rodríguez is actively preparing for a January transfer move, despite his contract with West Ham United running until June 2026.
The 31-year-old is eager to secure regular playing time and elevate his chances of being selected for Argentina’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rodríguez, who has earned over 30 caps for Argentina, is determined to be part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad as they aim to defend their World Cup title. His current situation at West Ham has been far from ideal, limited appearances and a lack of consistent minutes have prompted the midfielder to seek a fresh start, after it had been made clear that Nuno doesn’t see him as part of his future plans.

West Ham are open to receiving a lower fee for Guido Rodriguez:

Simply to get his high wages off the books and bring down the curtain on yet another unsuccessful 2024 summer signing.

With the World Cup looming in June 2026, Rodríguez also understands that staying on the fringes of club football could jeopardise his international ambitions. A January move would allow him to re-establish form and rhythm in a more prominent role.

One of the most likely destinations for Rodríguez is Club América, where he previously enjoyed a successful stint before moving to Europe. The Mexican giants were reportedly in talks to bring him back in August, and with new sponsorship deals hope to revisit the transfer.

Coach André Jardine is said to be pushing for an experienced defensive midfielder, and Rodríguez could fit the bill. The player himself is reportedly keen on returning to Coapa, where he was a fan favourite and is prepared to take a pay cut to make the move.

While América appears to be the frontrunner, rumours have also linked Rodríguez with a potential move to River Plate, though those reports remain speculative. His priority, however, is clear, find a club where he can play regularly and stay sharp ahead of the World Cup.

Having last featured for the international squad in September 2024, the challenge ahead is formidable for the veteran defensive midfielder. Yet, as history shows, players often find a new lease of life after leaving West Ham, it’s the infamous West Ham curse!

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

Rodriguez is too low energy, was a big part of the reason why our midfield was overrun so easily along with JWP who is also too low energy. Soucek and Irving are not high enough energy for a competitive midfield either, we need to look to Fernandes, Potts, Magassa and we need to be looking to give George Earthy minutes as he can break through this season too.
