Video: David Moyes on West Ham win

David Moyes post-match press conference following West Ham’s 3-1 win over Watford

Sum up the emotions

The big thing was to get a win and get ourselves up the table, which we did. It’s not got us completely safe but it has got us in a really strong position. I think we can win more games between now and the end of the season but if we don’t, I hope this points total will be enough to keep us up.

Really pleased with the players, they had a great work ethic and performed exceptionally well in the first half and defended well in the second half.

It would have to be an incredible goal swing to go down…

I am respectful to the manager because I know the situation they are in and how they are feeling. They might look at the results and hope things got the right way for them.

We haven’t got it done yet, we have got to pick up more points if we can and obviously tonight, it was a big night because Watford are one of our competitors, and we did a good job getting three points which was always going to be difficult.

I knew the game would be tight and thankfully we made it easier with the goals we scored in the first half.

Rice celebration with you, what does that say about the unity?

I wouldn’t say it meant an awful lot to me because Declan came over to me, he probably had nobody else to run to and found me there.

I think the big thing with Declan is how much he has improved, come on as a player, we are really pleased with him.

We have got the makings of some good young players and Declan Rice is one of them.

Under contract next season, how much does that mean knowing you can take the team forward?

Well I knew I would be here next season as I have a contract for next year so that was never really a thing, the big thing was to make sure we were a Premier League club and not a Championship club.

We haven’t done that yet.

Tomas Soucek similar to Marouane Fellaini?

A little bit but not that much as maybe you’re thinking with the height and size.

In Janaury we needed to add some more energy to the team, our physical stats were poor and we needed more legs in midfield so that was our priority to try and get something else.

Thankfully we got Tomas because not only does he give us good energy, physicality, he’s got a great goalscoring record in the Champions League, captain Slavia Prague at 23, he’syougn and going to improve. He is a great boy to work with

I see where you can make the comparison becaue of his stature but you have to say he scored a real good goal tonight, an old fashioned centre forward’s header. He has got us two or three already, a good return for someone who has just come to the Premier League.

Happy with character to sort it second half?

Yeah, I am really pleased that we stood firm, especially after the goal. I said at half time if we got a fourth it was over, but it wouldn’t be until we did. If they get a goal then it will change. Unfortunately, we gave them that opportunity and that chance. But we did well, stuck at it. We brought Ben Johnson in because of an injury to Ryan Fredericks in what was such a big game for him and the boys at the back. Albeit I didn’t enjoy the second half we saw it through.

Not quite safe but how do you approach next two games?

We’ll try to win them. We’ve looked as if we can score.

Don’t have any feelings of doing anything weird and wonderful, keep on the track we’re on. Winning at West Ham has to be something we do a lot more often than we have done, that has got us to 10 wins.

If we can get another one or two that would be great. I am not letting up, not changing anything until it is mathematically safe. We have to finish the season strong.

Best 45 minutes of your managerial spell here?

It was the best start and the best finishing, clean concise. I thought we have played better, I thought we played so well in the first half at Norwich. We’re starting games better, the opening games of the restart we didn’t start to well and were onto the players about it but the finishing today was clean when we got the chances. Against Burnley we had chances we didn’t take them but we did tonight.

Great first half, good all-round performance, looking forward to the next 2 games and to next season.. I’ve always been a Moyes supporter and think he deserves a lot of credit for the job he did last time and this season. The signings and performances of Bowen and Soucek under Moyes show a direction of travel that hopefully we can all get behind. He’s kept us in the Premiership – again. It’s what he does. COYI
