Ward-Prowse back on Hammers radar

The Daily Mirror are reporting that West Ham are once again interested in acquiring James Ward-Prowse, who the Hammers bid for during last years summer transfer window.

This report would tally-up with the suggestions that manager David Moyes is set to continue at the West Ham helm next season and spearhead our recruitment.

Given that Declan Rice appears certain to leave at the end of the season, David Moyes will be aiming to bolster his midfield lineup at the London Stadium. It’s clear the West Ham manager is a huge admirer of the Southampton player and West Ham were willing to bid up to £60 million for his at the end of last season.

The report also claims the admiration might be reciprocated with the Saints midfielder willing to complete a summer switch to West Ham.

Ward-Prowse is well renowned for his exceptional ability from set-pieces, which is something that would clearly appeal to David Moyes. The Hammers have seen an improvement in the potency of their corners and free-kicks recently with Aaron Cresswell and Jarrod Bowen supplying the ammunition.

However, the Southampton and England midfielder is a specialist at dead-ball situations and is almost unrivaled in the Premier League. West Ham would certainly present a similar menace from direct free-kicks too, which is not an attribute the squad have possessed since the departure of Dimitri Payet.

Whilst I believe the player would be a decent acquisition for the Irons, I certainly don’t view him as a direct replacement for Delcan. I also think he is unsuited to partnering Tomas Soucek from open play, but paradoxically he could proved the perfect foil from corners.

As transfer rumours go I do find this one reasonably believable due to our prior interest.

  1. I remember him saying he was happy at Southampton and living in the New Forest. The saints are notorious for selling their best players to at least balance the books but not so sure he’d fit in with our current M/F’s but, hey ho, WH might fork out again in the summer as long as we’re in the Prem. Moyes should be able to give Noble a bit more of a free rein in recruitment.
