“Waste of Time” Sullivan’s £17M Bid For Striker Who Ticks NO Boxes

Sometimes there are stories that just won’t go away—and that’s certainly the case today, with multiple outlets doubling down on claims that West Ham have made an official £17.5m offer for a striker.

The player in question, as covered by Claret & Hugh yesterday, is Norwich City’s USA international Josh Sargent. It’s fair to say the links have not been warmly received, given the big striker has only scored six goals in the Championship this season.

Writing in our comments section, Kenny Boy said: “I’m sorry but if West Ham buy Sargent we will be relegated! If we want to be playing Premier League football next season, we need to buy quality replacements who will improve the team and make a difference.”

Quite so Kenny, and my one comfort on this piece of speculation is that I can’t see Sargent popping up in Max Hahn’s number crunching moneyball computer.

Norwich City’s less than prolific striker is reported to be the subject of a £17.5m transfer offer from West Ham

Sullivan’s Personal Involvement Raises Eyebrows

It is now being widely reported that not only have West Ham made a £17.5m offer, but that David Sullivan has intervened personally.

At this stage, I can’t quite work out whether I don’t believe the story—or I just don’t want to. Claret & Hugh have reached out to a reliable source who should be able to clear this up, but suffice to say, the report is underwhelming.

Sargent is due to miss this weekend’s game against Southampton with concussion, but it’s fair to say this potential signing does not align with West Ham’s recent trend of signing young players with high potential. And I suppose that would be fine—if he were the finished article or a proven goalscorer like Ivan Toney. Unfortunately, Sargent ticks neither of those boxes

Does Sullivan never learn or is he just plain stupid. Nononono.

Apparently Sargent has 50 championship goals to his name and currently Norwich have many injuries and are playing a lot of their inexperienced younger players (like WHU), including 21 yo Makama in place of Sargent. They are in the same position as WHU, 3rd from bottom and have a new manager since November (like WHU). 5 points from their last 5 games but need more wins (like WHU). The similarities are eerie.

Anyway, difficult to believe Norwich would sell their star forward in January while fighting relegation. ‘Waste of time’ pretty much says it all.

Average player for a below average team, let’s face it Sullivan’s never wrong is he 🤣🙏☠

I’m inclined to agree with us getting relegated if he signs. It would be better to keep trying academy players and save the money if that’s the best you can get. It worries me that with Sulivan involved it probably will happen, so he maybe on the pitch with us next season all be it playing for the opposition in division 1 if not for us.

Take a look at the Slovenian striker at Swansea Gonzo, have also been linked with him though seen nothing on C&H looks much more like a Nuno striker.

The usual media links to top Brazilians and other strikers is classic Sullivan smoke and mirrors. Signing a high quality player from Swansea is more realistic as you say this link to Sergeant makes no sense he is not Pl quality and there are doubts about his ability to succeed outside of Norwich

  • Hammeroo says:

Sorry, it looks to me more like David Sullivan wants to bring Ronald McDonald to play for West Ham United.

  • Morty says:

Gonzo are you saying he is only interested in joining us because he has concussion? 😊⚒️⚒️

  • Sue says:

I hope Nuno has higher expectations than Sargent from Norwich.6 goals in the championship is nothing to get me excited.
We need to try and get a young striker playing in a top division who has goals to his name.
Need to go all out and try and get a to player
