While West Ham’s £27M bid for Jean-Clair Todibo may have been ultimately unsuccessful, but the intent behind the transfer is clear. . . The Hammers are prepared to spend big at the back.
Coupled with a move for Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the same day, the club has demonstrated that defence is a huge priority in this transfer window.
I guess this should be no surprise given the porous state of the Hammers’ defence last season, but whilst it’s important to identify a problem, the real trick is in fixing it.
There can be no bigger barometer of how seriously West Ham viewed their defensive frailties than the transfer moves that have been made in the last 24 hours.
The very fact that West Ham would commit themselves to another £27 million outlay on a central defender, having already purchased £40m Max Kilman, reveals everything about how Julen Lopetegui views the squad he has inherited.
Wan-Bissaka and Todibo may not be particularly exciting signings, or the tricky wingers we’re constantly linked with, but they would improve the team’s defending immeasurably. Despite missing out on the Nice defender, who would prefer to move to Juventus, the mere fact that West Ham almost purchased him gives me confidence that we will identify and recruit an alternative.
Tight fist Sullivan and part time Brady in charge what could go wrong
We may aswell just come to terms with earthy leading the line, may come good
When we actually sign players that can improve the squad and not just join us for a wage packet or coming to the end of there career, then I can see the intent and commitment taking the club forward to be a top 6 team.
Behave !A phantom ‘bid’
& Sullivan’s wallet as gone missing again & Alan your spot on
Someone else must’ve paid for Kilman, then…and Paqueta…and Kudus…
Selling Declan Rice…and Benrahma…and Fornals…and Downes might have helped pay for those?
We’ve been profitable in the last two windows, so no the wallet hasn’t really been opened as such. No transfer budget has been provided on top of money raised from sales.
Does the S stand for Sullivan or stupid?
Juventus yet to raise the cash yet so lets just wait and see….i am sure tomorrow the various media outlets social and otherwise will link us to another 5/6/7 players so lets just wait n see
We’re not messing about leaking names to the usual sources with all the usual caveats you mean.
“Asking price not considered good value by the club.”
“Selling club moved the goalposts at the last minute.”
“Agreed a deal with the club…but player doesn’t fancy it.”
“Player wants the move…but couldn’t agree a deal with the club.”
“Player wants the move…but wages are an issue”
I think all of the above have been used today actually.
Glad you’re confident though, Gonzo.
i obviously don’t want us to sign duds but i’d like speedier business as we looked awful in the friendly
