West Ham are unwilling to pay a £35m transfer fee for Aston Villa striker Jhon Durán, insisting he is just one of many striker targets on their shortlist. This is the latest update which has been given to C&H’s Sean Whetstone this afternoon.
According to a top West Ham source, the Hammers would be willing to negotiate a deal that includes add-ons based on the Colombian’s appearances and performances as part of a package with the Midlands club. However, the reported £35-40m is clearly a bit rich for such an inexperienced player.
Whether or not this proposal would appeal to Aston Villa remains to be seen; however, what is clear is that West Ham are keeping their options open. This follows news reported earlier that Lille striker Jonathan David was still very much on West Ham’s shortlist for a new striker. That being said, out of the two players, Duran is probably far better suited to how new head coach Julen Lopetegui wishes to play.
Whether this is just West Ham negotiating publicly with Aston Villa remains to be seen, but the striker position remains a priority for the club.
He went there for 15m…they’ll want a notable increase on that. He’s a squad member for one of the best countries in the world, young, and full of potential as well as having proven effective at getting goals against the biggest sides in the league along with having all the attributes to be successful.
Contrast the fact we’re internally saying someone like Downes is worth 15-20m….no where near international status, questionable Premier League quality etc.
This guy in this market is worth 30-35m…pretty comfortably. We just dropped the best part of that on a teenage kid from Brazil who’s never left home.
I’ve not problem if the club think there is better out there for the same money…that’s fine. Get the ‘next’ Duran from a Chicago Fire or some such, but to say he’s overpriced in the market as it is, given his standing, potential, age profile and attributes is VERY hard to make the case for IMO.
I’d go for J David over this bloke, a bit rich for a relative young player, but I get it, Villa want told onto him and develop him. Can’t fault that.
Duran has loads of quality, pace and he is very hungry The problem is his ego and not prepared to wait. He wants first choice every game and he’s not going to get it whilst Watkins is fit and on form. He would be a good signing but not for the price tag and monchi has set that to deter any transfer in the coming season. As a Villa fan I don’t want to see him go just yet coz im convinced we haven’t seen the best of him yet.
Cheap West Ham, we don’t care either way but Villa won’t under sell him. He’s got a lot of talent, 8 goals mainly off the bench with good movement. He’s behind Watkins but is pushing to play. Anyway now Milan are interested so I expect that’s where he will end up
Gonzo is right the bloke has hardly played in the premier but people just want to pile in on Sullivan
We will sign a striker, just hopefully not this one.
COYI 🛠️
Won’t be too bothered if we miss out Durán, but will be gutted if we miss out on Soule.
Isn’t Duran busy playing in Copa America right now?
Maybe he’s got other things on his mind….
£35mil. is silly money, let’s see how much he ends up moving for, wherever that may be.
Part time Brady and useless Sullivan
Villa fan,so much potential with guy,Bit of a gamble at 40 million, but odds are he will be worth that in a couple of years,Will easily get 10/15 plus goals playing a full season, shame he wants to go,but is headstrong, otherwise dynamite and so quick.Johnathon David average against Villa last year,
Come on say it like is !Just another ‘phantom bid ‘No intent .All smoke and mirrors !
Same old routine every transfer. I’m sure we weren’t paying £40m for Kilman either for a couple of weeks. Until we did.
Can’t help himself trying to save a fiver on everything the soppy little dwarf.
Price of everything, value of nothing.
You wouldn’t try and negotiate?
Sullivan is a multi millionaire so he obviously knows what he’s doing, what’s your net worth?
it’s actually depressing to think we’d be willing to spend 35m pound on this guy
he’s barely played, doesn’t even get a sniff in at international level and their have very average strikers, no premiership quality at all
at 35m you’re banking no him coming in and being our leading scorer and hope he maintains his value
so relieved to see the club haven’t lost the plot, i can understand overspending on kilman if lop who has worked with him sees him as critical, thats a totally different story
Good to see some sense amongst all the usual ‘just pay the full price’ merchants.
We’ve already overpaid for one new player. We need to strike a fair deal. There ARE other options out there.
Exactly. Per usual, any conversation about transfer fees on here devolves into a moan-fest over Sullivan. So it is nice to see someone with the right perspective. Villa are trying to fleece us with this outrageous price just because Chelsea sniffed around him before. He’s a 20m player AT MOST.
All talk and no do typical, west Ham ,we have needed a striker for the last 2 seasons, Antonio has been great for us ,but now ,we are being held to ransom, by other clubs who know we are desperate for a striker, and typically Sullivan is keeping his hand in his pocket
“That being said, out of the two players, Duran is probably far better suited to how new head coach Julen Lopetegui wishes to play.”
So Jhon Duran, a player who can only operate as a centre forward and uses his left foot, is “probably far better suited” than Jonathan David who can (and predominantly does) play as a centre forward but also as a secondary striker or as an attacking midfielder and is comfortable using either foot? He’s also known for his high work rate too.
Isn’t how Lopetegui wishes to play based around adaptable players with a good work ethic? Isn’t the major concern floating around that Duran’s attitude an issue?
Of the two, I’d take David every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
20 year old on a four year contract, 35 premier league appearances mainly subs but what chance does he really have behind Watkins ? He won’t be cheap.
Gonz is right though. He has a year left on his contract, he’s still green. Can’t understand some fan’s way of thinking as other club’s will feel the same.
No point in being bullied into paying huge amount on a player that will go for free next season.
He’s contracted at Aston Villa until June 2028
David Sullivan paying the asking price? Of course not…
same old same old Sullivan tight as a ducks arse
Aston Villa have the upper hand in this situation they probably don’t want to lose him but if he wants out then they should consider his request that dose not give them the right to put a price on a player that is unrealistic that most clubs won’t even consider him being unproven in the premier league
Why do we always have to mess about and another club comes in and buys him !
Exactly it’s like ground hog day again..how much talking can be done before bids are put in …like you say ..a club will bid close ish to what they want and we will lose out again…..I really thought all this was stopping..when you hear ” we have many other options ” then you know its all BS
