West Ham 0-1 Brentford

Areola:7 Incredible double save at the start of the game was overruled by goal-line technology as Brentford opened the scoring after 3 mins. Saved well with his legs on 20 mins.

Wan Bissaka:7 All action as we’ve very quickly grown to expect.

Mavropanos:7 Incredible tackle on 39 mins stopped Wissa in his tracks but lost the same player moments later but fortunately the goal was ruled out for offside. Much better performance from a player who always worries me.

Kilman:6 Something of a passenger as wave after wave of attack happened around him. Able to have a breather in the second half as West Ham went on the attack.

Emerson:4 Very soft defending for the Brentford opener as a weak and uncommitted header gifted The Bee’s a run on goal. The attack was the result of a poor corner where Emerson was on the right side of the pitch having delivered an easy catch for Flekken. Won a couple of important headers at the back post as Thomas Frank’s team smothered Potters tactics.

West Ham 0-1 Brentford; Emerson could do little stop Brentford

Alvarez:7 One of the few Irons players to start the game well but conceded an unnecessary freekick. West Ham’s slow midfield was in desperate need of an athlete.

Soucek:3 Massively struggled as the Hammers midfield was completely overrun early on. It was hard watching him trying to compete with a mobile team and back to back fouls saw Soucek collect an early card. As always he tried to compete but this was game for fast running and quick & accurate movement of the ball, neither of which is the big mans forte.

Soler:3 Went down and appealed for a free-kick when he could have stayed on his feet and the ball was still available. Brentford picked up the loose ball and Schade hit the post. Hooked at half time.

Paqueta:6 Started the game as centre forward but didn’t see much of the ball in the opening exchanges. Gifted Wissa a goal with a ridiculous pass across the face of defence which was ruled out for offside as Brentford lay siege to West Ham’s goal. Moved into midfield at half time and instantly better. Like the team as a whole, Paqueta’s display in each half was night and day.

Kudus:4 Tried a few dribbles but with the Hammers losing battles all over the pitch, the attack struggled for service in the first half. More involved in the second half and shot over from close range with his weak foot. A little too self indulgent at times.

Bowen:5 Looked fit and sharp as always but not massively involved. Had a good shout for a penalty.

Substitutes

James Ward Prowse

JWP was introduced after 45 mins

Ferguson:6 Part of a triple substitution at half time and replaced Soler. Immediately set up Kudus who blazed over from six yards. Initial impressions were good.

Ward Prowse:7 Swapped for Soucek and improved the midfield instantly.

Scarles:6 On for Emerson excellent half volley almost got a goal as Potter’s tactical switch changed the flow of the game early in the second half. At some point this lad will score a humdinger of a goal.

Guilherme: On for Mavropanos in the 87th min.

I’m reading this again and Gonzo must have fallen asleep and woken up on 39 minutes.
Mavro was poor, out of position for there dissallowed goals and the one real goal. He is so easy to play around.
Paqueta did nothing, did you see the long ball he played straight a Brentford player that led to a dissallowed goal.
Potter should have brought on Ferguson,Scarles and JWP after 30 minutes. Soler, and Emerson won’t be here next season .Soucke can’t start.
Potter needed to be bold. He’s now in trouble as we need to win one of our next 3 at least.
Why he left it to the 87 minute to bring on Guilherme is beyond me. Kudus should have been hauled off. Sorry but he’s so off form he thinks his place is guaranteed. Paqueta the same

    Pig’s ear team.

  • Haytham says:

If we donā€™t start kudus I think we might have a chance of winning games, that player is not worth it, he has lost it and what he is doing is living in his past. Shooting at point blank and missing REALLY, he is so selfish he is playing for himself and not the team for next season to be sold , if I was potter I would bench him, maybe he will get motivated .. please please potter give Irving a chance , he is young and still has the pace and stamina , and give gullierhme more than 3 minutes I mean seriously if you brought him on from the beginning instead of kudus we might have won

2nd half was better, but honestly this isnā€™t going to plan.
Our new manager might have em smiling and talking a good game, but come on that was poor and Mr Potter knows it. Kudos, my word, complete liability, him and Paqueta were at times Brentfordā€™s best source of assists, results/performances need to start improving

Team set up wrongly by Potter in the first half.

Improved with the subs in the second.

  • Mikey says:

At least we were re-taught a few lessons today that, hopefully, Potter will learn from. First, Scarles is obviously the first choice left back / wing back. So much better than Emerson, who has been terrible all season. Second, alverez and soucek cannot play together. Too slow, which means we lose all control of the game. We have known this for months, so why we keep choosing them and expecting a different outcome is completely mystifying to me. JWP was so much better, and mobile, and positive. How JLo came to the decision to send him on loan is just something else about that geezer I donā€™t understand. And third, playing a false nine when you have a genuine centre forward in the squad is nonsense. This is all basic stuff. I am surprised that a coach as tactically smart as Potter canā€™t immediately see these things.

Fair points, especially JWP, although I am not sure starting Ferguson would have made any difference? He’d have been standing around, watching Brentford attack, waiting for a pass.

  • David Green says:

How can you say Brentford’s goal was a double save.it was a goal so only one save. Credit for the attempt though.
Scarles a vast improvement than Emerson. Ditto Ferguson for Soler. Bowen and Kudus both tried but were poor. JWP set pieces were abysmal again. I don’t think one landed on a West Ham player. Alvarez no better than a 6.Mavropanos a 7, what game did you watch ? one decent tackle all game, gave the ball away or passed it poorly to one of our players. 5.

    • John Ayris says:

I thought that it was a double save at the far post before an attempted save at the near post, you’ve got me doubting now I’ll need to watch the goal highlights.

  • Darkhorse says:

Itā€™s the same old story, letting in an early goal and not turning up until the 2nd half. Things need to change.

  • Martyn says:

Itā€™s down to the team to give the fans something to shout about, this team doesnā€™t

    • Hammer Trev says:

Yes, the players need to do their bit, but You obviously don’t travel to away games Martyn. We have the best away fans in the country who shout and sing for 90 minutes no matter what the score. That stadium is full of tourists who don’t the words to ‘Bubbles’ let alone anything else. My point is, that does not help them perform.

      • Ess_Bee says:

Thatā€™s the club should create a proper ā€œhome endā€ where the great fans that travel and those who want to really get the team with making some noise. We should an end a bit like the Dortmund Yellow Wall. Maybe the Hammers fan clubs should start pestering the board for this. Just a thought.

  • Hammer Trev says:

The effect the lack of noise at the Olympic Morgue has on the team should not be underestimated. I was sitting behind two groups of tourists today streaming the Man City game ffs. My God, I hate that stadium.

  • Wally1982 says:

Two weeks of preparation, players returning from injury and that’s the result. Played off the park in first half and despite having more possesion in the 2nd half we posed no real threat.
The Potter revolution sees us with 1 win in 6.

    • Ess_Bee says:

Yeah, One win in 6 games is not a very good return. My optimism for a decent run of results has disappeared already. I am sure Potter will come good, but the team needs a couple of quick playing midfielders.

      • Wally1982 says:

The whole spine of the team needs changing. A lot of players who are nearing or gone past their shelf life.
A massive clear out is needed, Unfortunately with the money wasted in the summer we will have a limited budget.

    • B says:

The 1 win in 6 is a bit misleading?
Away at Villa x2 and Man Citeh,
Beat Fulham (Just), but poor performances at home Vs Palace & Brentford.

  • John Ayris says:

They monstered us first half and we were fortunate for it to only be by only one goal. Far better second half but nothing that really troubled Flekken sums it up. A big disappointment as I thought we’d win today.

Ferguson and Ward Prowse added so are positives. Away to Arsenal next is grim.
