West Ham 0-2 Liverpool – Player Ratings as Paqueta Loses His Head

West Ham 0-2 Liverpool

Areola:6 Great instinct save denied Isak from close range after 20 mins. Good reaction to divert a deflected cross. A major reason West Ham went in 0-0 at half time.

Wan Bissaka:6 Tried to overlap Bowen where possible, was lucky his scissor kick interception didn’t provide the visitors with a goal. Perhaps too hasty vacating space in the build-up to Liverpool’s opener.

Mavropanos:5 Signalled his intent early by dispossessing Isak before bursting into midfield. Still prone to clumsiness when in advanced positions. Critical interception in the 58th min took the ball off Gakpo’s toe but unfortunately lost Isak who scored moments later. Completely missed his header for Liverpool’s second.

Todibo:7 At the risk of repeating myself, Todibo looks like a different player and so much fitter.

Diouf:5 Wasted cross from a good position in the first minute. then a miss-kick moments later offered a chance to Gakpo. Recovered well shortly after with some good defending at the back post. Managed to get in several good positions to cross but couldn’t produce.

West Ham 0-2 Liverpool: Areola frustrated Arne Slot in the first half.

Magassa:7 Important tackle denied Liverpool a good chance early on. Dropped in to help out the central defence whenever a defender wandered forward. I really liked his sense of urgency and willingness to compete. Harshly booked for a brilliant tackle. Not that I normally comment on referee’s but there certainly appeared to be a bias in the officiating in favour of Arne Slots team.

Potts:5 Brilliant corner in the first half deserved better from Mavropanos. Looks like a Premier League midfielder.

Paqueta:2 Had a first half to forget until he played a perfect pass to Diouf on 46 mins. Immediately more involved in the second half and always looking for Diouf. Talked himself into a red card, ridiculous. Let everyone down at a time when his team needed him.

Fernandes:7 Wonderful dribble and pass to Wilson was a particular highlight of the first half. The Hammers best player in the opening 45.

Bowen:4 Not massively involved in the opening proceedings. Maybe a bit greedy at times but who can blame him? Worked hard as always. Nowhere near authoritative enough when Paqueta needed to be dealt with and was clearly close to talking himself into trouble. Missed the teams best chance on 87 mins.

Wilson:6 Looked sharp at the beginning of the game seems to have benefitted from regular gametime. Really having to deal with far too many long balls but on one occasion held the ball up and played a great pass to put Wan Bissaka through.

Wilson played well despite having no service

Substitutes

Guilherme:5 67th min replacement for Magassa as Nuno Espirito Santo chased the game. Got himself into an excellent position to shoot or play in Wilson but did neither. Decent dribble just before the end.

Fullkrug:5 Replaced Wilson on 77mins. Tried harder than his last outing.

Soucek:5 On for Potts in the 87th min

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

I started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

I give West Ham opinions and interviews on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus. Former video and content creator for West Ham United back in the days of Upton Park. I was lucky enough to feature in the documentary broadcast on that final wonderful game at the Boleyn when Winston Reid broke Manchester United hearts.

I frequently feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

More West Ham moaning is done on a daily basis here 👇👇

I thought Guilherme was a positive addition. He doesn’t have the confidence of Summerville and really needs a spell on loan to get that but he got into good positions.

NB – unlike the commentator said it isn’t “Gill Herm” it’s more “Gee Lyair May”.

Not sure how WHU are going to win games sitting back and handing the ball over. Puzzled by NES changing tactics so often, when some consistency might help a struggling team. Understand the need for 4-4-2 or some variant of it, but every week a different system? Paqueta, a shambles; where’s the pride?

Anyway, enough criticism, some days not a lot else matters.

Well played Fernandes & Magassa, nice to see Guilherme play a bit of football and hope Marshall catches a break. Potts doing great.

    rest in peace Billy Bonds.

    Gonzo
I see Geo is apoplectic about Paqueta’s behaviour getting sent off. Nuno will have to take disciplinary action with him in my opinion.
On a day when we lost the great Billy Bonds we cannot tolerate any West Ham player acting like that when we are fighting relegation.
I see Alan Devonshire has stepped down from managing Maidenhead. Perhaps he knew that Bonzo wasn’t long for this world.

    RIP Billy

  • Clifford Edwards says:

Have to say a disappointing day
But in my opinion it is time for Paq to leave
I honestly believe that the whole betting situation has destroyed him personally
You see brilliance and then mediocrity and is a shadow of the player he once was and that’s not down to our current position.
I worry about his well being and a move for all parties should now be a priority and January would be for the best.

  • Sue says:

The lads let everyone down today
I thought they might turn it on for our dear Billy Bonds
Very poor performance Bowen never really in the game and as for Paqueta your were non existent, the sending off was school boy stuff. If you put as much effort in your play as you did in getting yourself sent off. Let the team, fans and manager down
I think you need to be dropped after that display so the sending off worked out well in my opinion
Let’s give someone else a chance
Was disappointed that no youngsters were on the bench today
With a stronger bench this is a game we had a chance of winning
    Let’s have Marshall,Cummings,Orford
,Earthy and Kante using up some of the squad selection on match days
We really did not have anything on the bench to change the game today
Very disappointed today, hope we can lift the performance for Man Utd game

  • Geezer Chief says:

Disgusted by Paqueta. Get rid asap.
Bonzo was everything that this man is not!

  • Ray says:

West Ham were once again absolutely clueless today. Not a single shot all game, no idea what to do with a corner, Bowen is consistently a 5 or less being unable to keep the ball and every attempted cross hitting an opposition player. All of that said, NOTHING compares with the shear lunacy of mighty mouth Paqueta, who cannot even control his own mouth, much less a football. He is useless, and after today’s pathetic performance not even worth selling. Who is going to buy that liability? He is just not worth the trouble he brings. Who said that his previous suspension was part of a greater plan to make himself available for the tough run in to the end of the year? You could not have been more wrong. When he simply does his job, the commentators are gushing with praise, but the reality is that he loses 9 out of every 10 challenges, most passes go astray and the rest of the time he spends on his butt. He is a disgrace to the club and the game and West Ham should just buy him a ticket back to Brazil and send him packing. Things do not look good at all for West Ham now, especially as Burnley, Leeds and Forest all look like they at least know how the game is played. What a sad day for West Ham.

Areola 7 Bissaka 6 Diouf 6 Todibo 7 Mavropanos 4 he is NOT Premier League quality Potts 6 Magassa 5 largely off the pace & not convincing Fernandes 7 Paqueta played well but let everyone down by getting sent off 0 Bowen 5 Wilson 5 did very little
Guilherme 7 brought pace, effort & a nice run when he came on FĂźllkrug 6 not on long, but tried & gave Bowen the chance of a goal – which he missed (unbelievably) Soucek 5 not on long enough to form an opinion & get a proper assessment.

  • Jimmy says:

Any team that stands off for the first 85 minutes and as the commentator on Skye in the 91st minute said West Ham have done more in the last five minutes than in the previous 85 deserves all they get, we were woeful!! Liverpool were there for the taking! And as for Paqueta!!!! Nuff said!

  • Phil Baker says:

I hope that there weren’t any large bets on a Paqueta red card because he seemed determined to get sent off ,

  • Ian Bishop says:

Bowen had a really really poor game today , especially by his own high standards .
So many opportunities to take on the defence but he didn’t fancy it against Kerkez today ….
And not dragging Paqueta away was his worse moment in the game .
He just didn’t seem to be aware of what was happening ?
Diouf was very poor today too …
Neither of our wide players put in a quality cross all day .
    So frustrating!!
I thought Fernedez was excellent and our shape was so much better when Paqueta dropped into the hole ( after Magassa came off ) …
Games against Liverpool won’t define our season and we always , always lose to them regardless of their form !!

  • Carrick hammer says:

I think it’s time we got real not 1 shot on target against the worst defence in the prem league at the moment. We are a very poor team and our only hope of staying up is that the 3 teams below us don’t get any better. I am dreading the rest of this season.

  • Magnum says:

I love Lucas Paqueta as our most skilful creative player but today his behaviour was disgusting andit soured an already bitter day. The difference between Paqueta and a true hero and legend like Billy Bonds is night and day. Hang your head in shame Lucas

  • ricardo says:

For West Ham this time the game was mostly about defending, with only few attacking attempts and very few shots. One point would have been worth gold. Paqueta’s late red card made it all the more difficult.

  • John Ayris says:

Was there an effort on target ? If not then you cannot win. Paqueta sent himself off. Billy Bonds RIP.

    Some days are…
